Well I got my reply!

Hello Maddie,

Thanks for using Genes Reunited today. You tried to use a feature only available to full members, so I wanted to see if you needed any help.

Once upgraded you can send unlimited messages to other members of Genes Reunited to discover if you are related and share information about your family history. Plus, you can share photos with other members to bring your family tree to life.

If you didn't have your credit or debit card with you at the time, here's a link straight back to the upgrade page to save you a few clicks.

If you'd prefer you can send a good old-fashioned cheque in the post. You can find details on how to do that here.

I hope we see you on Genes Reunited again soon.

.....

Hello! Today I make the 9th my full membership is paid up until the 22nd!! I can still post - is this an excuse not to answer my question on why I am only getting 6 months and not 12! And what about the fact I am on continual membership!

Maddiecow

Maddiecow Report 9 Jan 2008 07:17

I have sent an email to GR asking why I am only getting 6 months for continual membership when others are getting a year ......I will see if I get a reply.

Am a bit miffed to sat the least as I have moved my tree to FTM and Ancestry now and have paid their higher fee's. I keep this going as I like the General board.

Funny I thought Genes were now standardising pricing for the year if you were on continuous renewal but I got this email this morning:

Your membership to Genes Reunited is about to come to an end.

You don't need to do anything because you've asked us to continue your membership automatically.

We'll renew your membership for 6 months on 22nd January 2008 using the card you used last time. If we are unable to do this, for example because your card has changed, we'll let you know.

If you do not want to continue your membership, please go to Genes Reunited and change your membership type to 'single' in 'My account details'

Now I don’t mind continuous membership and I don’t mind a reminder ...... What I do mind is why am I only getting another 6 months for price X - when others are getting a year?

Just checked my account. Previously I had single membership and have paid by card each year since I joined on 13th Dec 2003, and I know that it was the single dot that was ticked. But when I've just looked it had been changed to continous membership with out me knowing. I have now ticked the single box again and will see what happens in a fortnight's time ( I was late renewing last year). Will let you know what happens.

I've just re-newed after six months and have been charged £9.95 for another six months, nothing about re-newing for a year and why is it the same price for a year for some and only six months for others ? (Errrrrrr does that make sense?)

Chris,
A similar thing happened to me last year. I was definitely NOT on continuous membership, never had been. I received an e-mail a month beforehand telling me how to pay. A week before my membershhip was up I went to renew and found they had already renewed me - a week after the e-mail and a full 23 days before my membership was due for renewal.
My daughter wasn't too pleased as she'd paid for me the year before and they'd taken the money out of her account!!

I think the priceing system is worked out by how long a person has been a member......maybe......?
I'm due to renew and it will cost me £9.95 for a year.

confused even more now, i joined in jan 07 with a single 12 month membership, emailed me in dec 07 to remind me to renew membership in jan 8th 08 and the cost would be £13.00 for 12 months, so have checked membership cost in the help box and can only find £13.00 and not £9.95 for a year.
so im very confused now, am i being overcharged?

Amanda2003

Amanda2003 Report 3 Jan 2008 18:34

Has any one noticed the "pay by text"option ? A text costs £5 and gives the member one month as a full member.
That works out at £60 a year ........couldn't believe my eyes.

12 month membership and continuous membership are not the same thing.

Anyone who joined after Jan / Feb last year, or who lapsed their previous 12 month membership will have 6 month membership, irrespective of whether they are continuous.

My membership renewal was on continuous membership yet they didn't take it as they said the card was not valid... it is exactly the same one thay used last year and the year before.
Still, I got an extra day out of it.... wow! LOL

Gill Report 3 Jan 2008 18:13

I am currently trying to find out from GR why I have been charged £9.95 for 6 months renewal. I have just checked and I am a continuous member, but from reading the other posts in this thread I should have been given 12 months not 6.

This is their response:

Thanks for your email.

If you have an annual membership and renew either 2 weeks before the renewal date or up to 4 weeks after it, the cost of membership is £9.95 for one year. If you opted for our auto-renewal the fee would be automatically taken from your card. We will email you 28 days before the renewal takes place so that you are free to opt out of it if you wish.

If, for some reason, the auto-renewal fails then you will have to manually renew your upgrade.

If you renew your upgrade over 4 weeks after the date it expired, then the cost of renewal is £9.95 for 6 months.

If you have a 6 months membership, then your renewal will be for another 6 months.

I hope this clarifies the situation.

Best regards,

Rachel

I think I understand!! However they still appear to be charging different amounts for different people. Is this fair?
