the smell of brut

i remmember as a child the usual daily visit to my nanas as mum did the house work for her, and we walked past a little park, and some bikers were sat by entrance, they were polite enough and said hello to mum, but i remember the smell of what i later recognised as brut, cos after that it always made me nervous
no idea why

My granny had a "Sacred Heart! picture on her bedroom wall (a picture of Jesus with a heart on his chest with a dagger through it) when the lights went out it was luminous. One time when we were staying with her I was sharing her bed with her, I was about 6 or 7 years old, the lights went out and the picture looked at me, by the time granny came to bed I was scared out of my brains and hiding under the covers--I heard something getting onto the bed and thought it was the picture come to life - I kicked my granny out of bed in my panic!! They all (the grownups) thought it was quite hillarious--I didn't - needless to say!!

I was a bit nervious of the dark as a kid but not to bad, until one night i went upstairs to my bedroom
and i heard someone come up the stairs go to the toliet and then i thought i 'd heard him/her go down stairs when all of a sudden my bedroom door opened a bit and i saw a hand turn off the light and then shut the door.
i went and turned it back on sat back on my bed and the door opened again and the hand turned off the light again , by this time i'm scared stiff ,so stood by the door and then grabbed the door pulled it open and flew down the stairs .
it was my b/i/l. having a joke i was only about 8/9 yrs old but since that night i have been scared of the dark .

I too was terrified of the Daleks - for months I used to lie awake in bed, thinking they were coming along the landing to my bedroom! Now I love all the Doctor Who programmes.

I also had a bad experience having a tooth out by gas, and wouldn't even have gas and air when I was in labour with my children, so I haven't got over that one yet....

I was always terrified of Oscar The Grouch off Sesame Street.

One christmas, I snuck out during the night and started opening my presents. It was still dark and I couldn't see very well, but when I got to the last present I started screaming.

It was an Oscar The Grouch piggy bank that growled when you lifted the lid................................Dad got up and instead of comforting me from my terrible fright, he belted me across my bottom and sent me back to bed in the dark..............sob!!!!

Living in old house, and having to go to outside loo at night, in case flannel foot (a burglar. who wrapped his feet in flannel so no one heard him) got me.

Flannel foot was reported in newapapers in mid 1930's. I was about 3 or 4 at time, and they used to say 'mind flannel foot dont get you'. when I wanted to go to loo.

I was terrified of 'The Ankle-Grabbing Monster' who lived under my parents bed....My bed was OK because it had drawers underneath,so no room for a monster!

I was in infants' school when a girl in my class told us that we should never look at a mirror in the dark because the reflection would jump out of it and chase us.
We believed her too.
I still think of that sometimes ..and remember her, if I pass a mirror at night but it no longer bothers me.

My children were all scared of White Eyes.It all started at my brothers when he was doing his house up.Had my 3 children there as tots and all playing up.My brother went down the cellar to show OH something and pushed a feather duster up through the floor and said he was watching and his name was White Eyes.Omg White eyes lived with us.He even came out in the boot of the car.My children always acted perfect when we reminded them who was watching.lol They all laugh so much now about it. The music on Doctor who, I used to hide behind the couch when it was on, oddly I wasn't afraid of any of the monsters.
I can't explain it myself.

Rubber bands !! Those thick, brown ones - my sister used to dangle them in front of me. I hated seeing lots of them in a pile, perhaps because they reminded me of worms, which still scare me! Also didn't like electricity pylons or the humming noise when walking under one.
