Member Since: August 2004 Posts: 76 Send Message	My 4xgreat and 3xgreat grandfathers (Zacharia and Thomas Greenhough) worked on Cromford Canal in Derbyshire, the story is that it was when people could only sign a 'x' for their wages but my two ancestors were the only ones who could sign their names.

Member Since: March 2006 Posts: 938 Send Message	I do and one family is a pain to find! my gggreatgrandfather Thomas Hurtley was a boatman on the canal in Silsden, yorks i cant find the family after the 41 census. his daughter, my ggreatgrandma, married into another boatpeople family, the Cooks from Burnley, lancs i guess they knew each other from working the leeds liverpool canal.

	Yes I have one William Proctor and he married a boatmans daughter in 1906 Eliza Blunn, There daughter told a family member as a child she had to be tied to the boat incase she fell overboard. Gill
