My 4xgreat and 3xgreat grandfathers (Zacharia and Thomas Greenhough) worked on Cromford Canal in Derbyshire, the story is that it was when people could only sign a 'x' for their wages but my two ancestors were the only ones who could sign their names. |

I do and one family is a pain to find! my gggreatgrandfather Thomas Hurtley was a boatman on the canal in Silsden, yorks i cant find the family after the 41 census. |

Yes I have one William Proctor and he married a boatmans daughter in 1906 Eliza Blunn, There daughter told a family member as a child she had to be tied to the boat incase she fell overboard. |
