As a result of this, I've now gone for overkill !! I already had my tree on PAF as well, but now I'm putting everything on paper too. That way, I'm covered for both website and pc crashes! Thanks GR for reassuring us that our notes are still in there 'somewhere' and not just floating off into the ether!

This really is a warning that your precious information shouldnt be in just one place. I have a lot more on my computer than on here. Just get a genealogy program. That is also backed up on a rewritable CD which is constantly updated. Margaret

As you may be aware over the weekend the site had some difficulties. One of the results of reloading the site and switching to a new database server was that notes are not showing. The information is still in the database, just not availablle for viewing. The notes will be back online as soon as possible. We apologise again for any inconvience this may cause. Very sincerely, Michelle

When you do your notes next time have either word or excel where you copy and paste it to. Excel would be better because you can have additional sheets. Saves paper and you always have your back up off of GC.

I haven't added notes on the site so luckily I am not in the position that some of you find yourselves. What I did do some time ago after one of the disagreement sessions, was to print off all the trees I am allowed to view just in case people disappeared after posting on controversial threads. I do this regularly now and just date the latest and throw the rest. I know it's a case of stable door / horse, but print a hard copy of everything. It may mean typing it all in again at some time, but at least you have the info. I hope you all get your notes returned. Jacky :-)

Thanks for the update Manda. I'm a bit worried about the response. "Passing it to our technical team to have a look at" doesn't sound like it's a quick fix. Crista

Has anyone heard from "de management" as to whether or not we have lost our notes for good or not. Would be nice to know! I've emailed them but nothing (as usual) I've put my tree on other sites now just to be safe. Wish I'd done this sooner !! Brenda

Is it any wonder that the numbers of names recorded on this site is going down! I expect many people have removed their trees for safety's sake. There have been so many problems over the last few weeks that I am glad that I only keep a 'skeleton' tree on here (excuse the pun). Are the notes back now? Magsx

Thought I would nudge this back up. Has anyone got their notes back? Or has anyone heard back from GR about this problem? I'm a 'NO' for both questions at the moment. Lynne

It sounds like they have had a real problem over the weekend. I wonder if they were hacked. The site should be protected by NukeSentinel to protect it from hackers. Wayne

Rule one of computers - keep backups. Suggest that you all download your gedcoms and put them into another site like Gencircles as well. Yo also get the benefit of another set of matches (and it's free) Peter

Oh bum, so they have! I had all the record office page and volume references kept in my notes. The 'notes' box is when you are adding (or editing) information on an ancestor, date and place of birth etc, etc, and there is a nice little place for notes. But now the notes have all gone and all we have left is empty boxes :((

DOHH I am thick but which notes do you mean? If you click on the column that say's " edit/view details" Is that where you mean?

AAAAHHHH! My notes have gone too. Luckily I do have paper copies of everything, but its not very convenient. I don't know what happened over the weekend, other than that they were undertaking "planned maintenance" and would restore full service "very shortly". After 24-hours of blank screen I e-mailed them asking how planned was the maintenance, as most sites tell you in advance if they are going to be unavailable, and how shortly is very shortly. I didn't get a reply. nell

Oh dear everyone. I am getting worried about this. I keep remembering little bits of info that I had put in the notes section as I have little time to do research and have no system for keeping records on paper. Bits like where people are buried and which stone number in the cemetry etc that I stumbled across online. Oh yes, and also quite a lot of people found on the IGI that I haven't had the time to check up on yet in the parish registers. I have a code in the notes bit that reminds me they are not confirmed rellies. I really can't check everything again. Lets hope they come back soon and I can stop panicking. Lynne
