devon industrial school?

Trying to determine what this is? Anyone familiar with an industrial ?school in rural district of torrington, merton all saints parish, devon, that the 1901 census shows the occupants as attending school / Uncertain if young girl placed there is a gr. aunt?Many thanks all,nan |

try this site: http://www.missing-ancestors(.)com/ it is a list of industrial and ragged schools (also used to describe orphanages) there are three devon schools listed, with a description of what they do and how much it costs |

p.s. try this site too: http://www.institutions.org.uk/ go to site search and enter "industrial school" it seems like the "industrial school" was a sort of hybrid school, orphanage and prison ! Hope this helps, for your background material, at least ! |
