Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 21 Sep 2004 17:27

I think they are much better off than they would have been if born 150 years ago. At least they have a chance to reach adulthood and girls AND boys have the opportunity to travel and achieve success in a anything they choose. It would be wonderful if children from all over the world could have the same wonderful chances in life that ours have. Maz. XX ps Kathleen is right - bombs in the war and by the IRA could have stopped people living normally, but you can't let your life be ruled by fear. My mum lived in the East End during the blitz and I travelled into London daily by tube during the 80's and 90's. My husband is in Moscow this week and will be there every 3 weeks this winter. Life goes on and we just have to do the best we can for ourselves and our children without making them scared too.

Throughout history mothers have worried about their children, technology is advancing but that has always been so. We take electricity for granted - but at one time people feared that it was too dangerous and would kill them all. At one time our roads were dangerous because of the number of horse drawn vehicles, they had traffic congestion in busy towns even then. I lived through WW2, it was scary at times. There has been terrorist attacks over many years, the IRA mortar-bombed Heathrow. My husband and I both worked there, I also worked in London for BA and we often had to evacuate the building because of bomb scares. Now I have three sons working at LHR, two others work in London. One is an Escalator engineer on the Underground, the other works in different areas to do with London Transport. I would not be able to function if I did not close the lid on my worries - like Steedie's mother I put them in a box and lock them away. To put it into perspective, my husband died one day of an aneurism - I had gone out for the day, left him at home to enjoy a day of leisure and he died. I didn't worry about him, he was safe at home wasn't he? What I am trying to say is, you are a mother and you will always worry about your children. That is only natural. Try to enjoy your children growing up and don't let your enjoyment of them be blighted by thoughts of what might happen. Just ensure that you enjoy this time and that they know you love them. Maybe it is only with age that you learn all that worrying served no useful purpose. Kathleen

No i know...im sure you must worry for him all the time. I used to worry for my fella cos he gets the train every day into London and with all the bomb stuff you do worry but now that i work in the city i try not to think of it. My brother is a police man has been for about 8 months, and my mum always says that she just has to put all her worries inside a box cos if she didnt, she wouldnt let him leave the house everyday! But its easy for me to say that you see cos i dont have kids of my own yet, of course i constantly fear for my baby sisters and brothers..but i do see how my mum constantly worries about all of us....my motto is you live but once...quite a common one but easy to understand isnt it...all of this terrorism stuff is sick isnt it...you shouldnt be made to fear for your hubbys safety, just aint fair is it.x

i dont understand...do you mean with the russian tradgedy or has something else happend?? My sister is only 9, i have others under the age of 3...but ruby my sister gets really distressed when she hears about war. She is really into her history and a very clever kid, she knows everything there is to know about world war 1 and 2 and now when she hears of the wars due to terrorism it terrifies her and really upsets her... you have a very good point there lisa.

Stephanie Report 15 Sep 2004 16:55

yeah i understand....the thing that i think worries me the most is global warming...but i do think that with technology and stuff, if the worst was to happen there will be a way of working round things. As for our childrens future, i reckon it will be a fun one for them. with all the new stuff coming out like ipods and things, technology is only going to become more wierd and wonderful and i think our kids and grandkids are going to have a great time....but who can say for the generations after that...we just gotta hope that its ok for them...xxxx

Having read about children literally starving to death in the first world war in Britain, seeing people blown to bits, missing school so they could run the household and mind the smaller children for their mothers who were working at munitions factories, I don't know that the future could be any worse. nell
