From the 28th Oct 04 anyone needing a passport after that date and are thinking of going to the states for a holiday will need to go to the American Emb in London in person to obtain a visa. I am going to surprize my husband for his 40th birthday in 18 months time a trip to vegas but how am I going to do this if he needs to go to London in person. Also we live 7 hrs away from London not a short trip? Is this info right or is there a short cut? Lisa

Lisa - check out this link for more info...... www(.)ukpa(.)gov(.)uk (remove the brackets) Click on UKPS News - link date 09-08-2004 - Visa-Free Travel to the USA for British. I think we can still travel under the Visa Waiver Programme but you MUST have the new style 'machine-readable' passport (the burgundy coloured one)............but there are links to the US Embassy website too............

Lisa, I thought the US relaxed the rules on this until the member countries are able to pdate their passports with biometric data. My understanding is that you will be photographed and finger printed once you land in the US. Crista

Thanks Anne looked at the site very helpfull. Crista - My husbands runs out 2007 so we will okay for 2006. My dad runs out next May 05. Am I right saying that he will get his new passport in May and still be okay to travel till the end of Oct 2005 without having to go to London. It states on the web site that you can travel until the end of your passport expires issued before Oct 2004. After that date biometric passport is needed what ever one of them is and the president has agreed a one year deferral of this to Oct 2005 what happens after Oct 2005? Regards Lisa

Lisa, Sounds like your dad will be okay for now. I think you need to have either need 3 months or 6 months left on your passport to travel. I assume he will he have to get a visa if his new passport doesn't have biometric data on it by next October and he needs to travel to the US. Crista
