Couldn't find my ancestor, James. Finally found him in 1851 as Jas. I posted a similar question on this site months ago and most responses were for James.

Ahhh right now I get it... LOL In Scotland Thomas' get called Tam more than Tom I guess its like Alexander... I often find it down as Alex'r even though most people with the name get called Alex or Alec or even Sandy.

Tom is short for Thomas, its just that Thos (and Chas and Jas) are accepted written abbreviations of the full names, like Eliz. for Elizabeth and Robt for Robert. nell

Traditionally, "Jas." is the diminutive of James. I have a relative whose given name is Jazmine but who is usually referred to as "Jaz". len

John, Charles would usually be shortened to 'Chas'. And I agree with the others, I've seen Jas for James! Mandy :)
