I had the same problem with my youngest. She started to shave her legs at the age of 12yrs old.. I thought it was far too young. Especially as she is a natural ash blonde. I think it is just a trend girls want to follow when they hear their older friends are doing it. I have always been told that the earlier and more you shave, the more you will have to do so. I personally think that shaving should only start when you need to do so. E.G. Under the arms first, when you start sweating in your teens. This is all to do with personal hygiene. Leg shaving is purely cosmetic. Luckily I am very fair haired and have not really felt the need to shave my legs on a regular basis. Perhaps on special occasions. But there again I am 50yrs old and quite old fashioned. Jenny.

For the sake of about £10 I'd make her an appointment to have her legs proffesionally waxed or sugared. The hair then grows back softer and sometimes if your lucky.......less. What ever you tell her, she will do the opposite, I know I did lol Gerri (the gorilla) x

Elaine, we had THAT conversation a good while ago as she started to develop when she was about 8. what is frightening is how much she knows,we often sit and chat and i quite stunned by what she does know that i haven't told her!!!!! Karen

Karen, as she's asked you it's obviously something she's bothered about and all girls are different, some really do have extremely hairy legs at a very young age and get very self conscious about it. Even if you say no, she may try it anyway and could end up making a real pigs ear of it! If it were me, I'd help her out, firstly with some positive advice and then with the actual deed itself. If she really, really needs to do it, then introduce her to waxing now and save her lots of hassle in the long run. Daisy

My daughter's 12 and has just started using a lady shave. Has been asking for a couple of years but managed to persuade her not to do it unless she really, really had to 'cos once you start.......... One thing that managed to delay her was when I showed her my legs when they hadn't been shaved for a while - she was quite horrified!!! Everyone's different, as long as you're both happy then go for it, if you're not so happy then you'll have to get her to wait for a bit. Good luck. Kxx

i quite agree about pressure but i don't think in her case thats it,she is very mature physically and mentally, while most of her friends aren't. i don't want her to do it yet but how can i say ok do you arms and take her to be measured for a bra but say no to shaving legs

My daughter asked me if she could shave her legs last year, she was 12 and I said no. Mainly because I felt she was too young but also because I'd prefer her to wax because I have lots of scars from shaving over the years. She is 13 next month and hasn't mentioned it since (I think the thought of waxing put her off lol). Anyway I suppose a ladyshave would be better than a bic razor lol Jo xx

If she feels confident and happy let her do it. Maybe if shes also develping, a talk on the birds and bees and body changing can be added in your conversations. Elaine x

we tried immac once before under the arm but it stung her like hell and gave her a rash. isn't it strange that us mums don't mind cream but have a problem with a razor

Claire

Claire Report 7 Mar 2005 13:26

My mum said that she would rather I didn't shave my legs (at 12) but instead showed me how to use immac cream. I don't know why, but she felt this was less 'grown up' than shaving. Claire xx
