As many on here have already pointed out, spelling may not be some ones strong piont, so rather than put them ill at ease, we all write how we feel comfortable, that way no one knows who has the spelling promblems, also a lot of people feel that any comunication is better than none at all, live and let live is my motto, if you want to write your words in full then go ahead and give others the option to write in short if they so wish, all coments on a thread are welcome, whatever the spelling. Bev short for Beverley (which I do not like so much)

Hi, I noticed a few of you spelt Grammar , Grammer, which is correct please as I always thought it was Grammar. Or is it one of those words where you can use both, like Grey and Gray?? AL

I think it's very disrespectful to highlight other people's little weaknesses. Stones and glass houses spring to mind. We all make mistakes from time to time. So what! This is not an examination is it, we're chatting for goodness sake. Jan :-))

Surely its horses for courses? I don't type messages here in the same way as I would address a letter to an official. I talk differently to the children I work with at school, from the way I talk to adults. I also talk differently to the children I work with depending on whether we are working in class, or playing at breaktime. I might also talk to them differently again if I saw them out of school. The only point of grammar, spelling, etc is to enable people to understand your meaning better. It sometimes matters and you need to be clear, at other times people can get the hang of what you are saying without worrying too much. Some slang I find amusing and colourful, other slang I hate. But tolerance is a great virtue. nell

Dont mind what anyone writes as long as I can understand it and not have to go back and start the sentence again though when I see 'I no (know)' 'I now (know)' and differing ways that No, Now, Know, New, Knew are used this does irritate and usually means a re-read. Another annoyance is CemetAry instead of Cemetery. Otherwise, for the most part I am O K with gonna wanna etc., and incidentally when you leave somebody you may say 'Bye Bye' - fewer keystrokes to write 'Bibi' and the latter is a term that has been in use on keyboards, telex for example, long before computers came along.

I don't like being misunderstood therefore try to be accurate with spelling, grammar and syntax. I like to be sure of understanding others so wish they would return the compliment. Has anyone read 'Eats shoots and leaves' ? Len

'Thanks' is a shortening of 'I give thanks' rather than 'thank you' and comparing 'relatives' and 'rellies' is not really comparing like with like. Like others, I don't really understand the need for 'thanx' instead of 'thanks' and suspect its more to do with the ease of spelling than anything else. I have to confess though that I have used 'yup' or 'yep' instead of 'yes' on occasion and it's all to do with context and trying to add intonnation to the written word. It's a difficult topic - the notion of the 'correct' way to spell words is a relatively new one. 'Eats Shoots and Leaves' is on my reading list and while I acknowledge the place of 'chat' and the needs of those whose skills are not so honed, parents and teachers are still left with the thorny problem of how to give children the many different language skills in today's complicated society. They have to learn several different 'Englishes' - spoken, written, business, chat, formal, informal, text (or is that txt?) etc etc.

Very good Bob. I once had one very similar, what happened to it? I have a number of pet hates, using all capitals, using all lower case letters, Using 'your' instead of 'you're' using im instead of I'm. Dave
