Dear GR Over the last few days I have been flitting between the message boards as usual but have noticed that a great many people are unhappy with one thing or another about this site. I have belonged to GR for over a year now it could be two (I actually can’t remember when I joined!!!) but have only recently started to join in with the message boards (I was without power for 6 months due to the hurricane last Sept) This site has become my lifeline, literally – I think it is actually keeping me sane at the moment. It has given me somewhere to focus my mind and to use my brain both in the field of genealogy and conversation. When I joined I thought it would give me something to do – to trace my family – I didn’t go into it big time to start with (building a house takes a lot of time and energy) but since our power came back I have looked into the message boards and realized how the people on this site are dedicated, caring people who are determined to find their ancestors and this has given me encouragement and the will to try myself. However, lately I have noticed the unrest between fellow members. To me it seems we have two camps on the one hand we have the group who help with genealogy and do all they can to advise and steer people in the right direction but who sometimes like to be a bit naughty and have a chat and a laugh over a ‘drink’. Then we have those who like to chat about all sorts of varied subjects some jokey some serious, have a ‘drink’ and a laugh and help people along the way and still search for ancestors. Correct me if I’m wrong but what is so dissimilar with these groups…. There is a third group who probably use the tips and records boards but never join in with the banter. We all have a choice to join in or not, we all have the choice to be silly sometimes which we need to carry on, not just with genealogy but with life. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and on some threads discussions get heated but that is what a discussion is ‘talking over a subject’ everyone airing their views. I am a person who likes a discussion and also enjoys a ‘drink’ and a laugh all be it a virtual one! If everyone drank in the same bar think how crowded it would become! Those of us new to this would sit back and not participate, would long to join in but not be noticed. If there is a thread I am not interested in or I don’t wish to read – I don’t read it. Sometimes a really good thread disappears off the first page but if you only look at the first page you are missing a great deal. Some days the tips first page doesn’t seem to change at all. One thread can’t make that much difference to a page and you would be surprised how many tips you can pick up while sitting quietly in the corner! This is a member’s site – run for members and as such shouldn’t all its members have their say, whatever or wherever they choose. I see many new members ask the whereabouts of ancestors on the Chat board, on the general board, on the tips board – whoever looks at the trying to find board? Most have a struggle putting something on there anyway. I could go on but I expect most are bored by now! I just want to say that most of you who post threads have helped me in one way or another…more than you will ever know, so thank you Genes members for bringing me back – almost – to the light. If that sounds dramatic it was meant to. So come on GR bosses play fair with your members, give and take! – and please don’t ban me, at this moment I would be lost without this site and its members.
