Lady Chatterley's Lover! My brother (10 years my senior) bought a copy of it and left it behind at home one day when he went to work. I saw it and wondered what it was about, read a bit and didn't understand it! It was only when I was older that I read in the newspapers about the fuss it had caused, so I felt secretly pleased that I'd actually read some of it. LOL Never bothered reading the rest of it afterwards though. My favourite kids' book was Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. A real tear-jerker about a horse. Also liked Heidi, Fairy Tales by The Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson, Little Women & its sequels, Treasure Island, The Borrowers, The Future Took Us, and Day of the Triffids (another one of my brother's books). My favourite comic was Mickey Mouse Weekly. CB >|< |

The only ones I remember, which therefore must have made a lasting impression, were Treasure Island by R L Stephenson and Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. I remember (when I was under 10) avidly reading weeklies such as Adventure, Wizard and Hotspur , keen to get through as many as I could, being aware that I would grow out of them. I am not a large person but an enormous reader, mostly of non-fiction. Len |

Beatrix Potter books. A book my Mum used to read to me wish I could remember the name I think it may have been something to do with Uncle Remus but have never been able to recall the name or find it. Perhaps someone can recall it. It was about a little coloured boy and his Mummy used to say to him 'Eeee papimambas you aint go the sense you were born with.' Anyone remember it let me know. When I was really small, my favourite book to have read to me was PEEPO. When I was old enough to read alone it was anything by Roald Dahl and the Little House series. Natalia x |

My very favourite books were the Anne series & like Anne I get upset when people spell my name wrongly. I also enjoyed any Enid Blyton & there was a book I won as a sunday school prize called Behind Convent Walls. I've no idea who wrote it but it was about the time of the Huguenots troubles. I read this over & over & got quite a shiver when a few years ago my cousin who had researched my mothers family said we were probably Huguenots who escaped to London. The Narnia series only came on the scene when my children were small but I've read them all & other books by C S Lewis & love them. Vivienne |

I used to read all the Enid Blyton books and loved all the adventures that went on. There was the Famous Five, Secret Seven, Naughty Amellia Jane, Mallory Towers (and probably load more). I absolutely loved them. Mum always encouraged me to read which is probably why I'm still such an avid reader. Jan |

Milly Molly Mandy was my absolute favourite when I first got into avid reading at about 7 years old, but then went on to Enid Blyton's Mallory Towers and St. Clare's books. How I fancied a midnight feat in the 'dorm' and be party to Carlotta's misbehaviour. Another favourite was Children of the New Forest by Captain Maryatt. Not really understanding the history behind it, I was really attracted to the Cavaliers - not the Roundheads. Must have been the flambuoyant hats etc. Needless to say, I am still an avid reader to the point where I have been so engrossed in a book....... I have been known to read whilst on the loo !!! Sorry, but it's true. |
