It would seem that we're not the only country that desecrates graves in the pursuit of money, have just read an article on another site cocerning OZ. Some Graveyards, I believe in NSW have been earmarked for clearance, I think that most of them are war graves and because there are no families to care for them the headstones will be removed, and other states there are looking to do the same, its a shame these poeple gave their lives for the liberty of their fellow countrymen and they are prepared to do this, Shame is too weak a word to describe it, why cant they leave them in peace? Well I for one would'nt ever buy a house on top of a sacred place like a cemetary. Many years ago that happened in Lyme Regis. They disposed of the church and promptly built a block of flats on top of the graves. The results were disastorous, no one could live there as things were flying about and the atmosphere was dreadful. The occupants of the graves were obviously very distressed. I don't know if the flats are still there as there was talk of pulling them down. It's a true story and quite scarey, makes you think. Jo. |

I think that really discusting. Some relatives may not know this is happening is they do not live in the area, but still would not want a grave building on. I dont known how anyone, in a so called civalised country can even think of doing it. I thnink every effort should be made to stop it. I wouldnt want it to happen to a relatives grave of mine. deb |

Hi Kim my love good to see you as always just popped in but will be popping out again very soon off to catch up on some well needed beauty sleep ;-))) I will definitely add my voice to object to this disgraceful proposal I am shocked and upset for the people of the area and those who may just want to check out the old Cemetery a thing I love doing I find it very enjoyable and informative going through graveyards and cemeteries to think they want to replace this historical site with housing its archaic. Many parts of the biggest Cities have graveyards under Roads housing and factories etc., but we don't live in those times when the burial or disposal of the body was of the most mportance. Historic importance prevails well I thought it did today. I lived beside and knew well a street called Pitfield Street in North London, the name came from the time of the Great Plague when there was mass graves, these pits were dug all over London, very important part of history for us who go looking for the past surely it's important that we try our best to preserve it, voice our opinions let them be known. In Mexico on All Souls Night (Hallow'een) families take flowers, and picnics to their ancestors graves and the older memebers tell the youngsters about their relations . It's not macabre but a really happy celebration of their lives. Jay |

Apparently there is a right to objection by living relatives to The alteration of any grave. Petition may help. Id recommend a visit to C.A. B. as well. Sue |

This housing association has no sense of history or what has gone before them. Throughout the world cemeteries of the forgotten dead have made way for buildings and motorways in some areas the graves have been relocated and in others they are trampled into oblivion. Future generations wanting to trace families and knowing where ancestors were interred will be greeted by rows of houses, roads and the like. The graves of our war dead interred on foreign soil are looked after. One just needs to look at the graves of ancient times which are still being plundered for treasure and there are no one saying leave them alone. John |

Oh Nelly, that is really sad. Why can't these graves be respected. I found my gggg grandparents grave recently. They have a beautiful headstone in really good condition. My grandad was born in 1795, can't remember when he died. I really felt close to them and laid some flowers. I feel quite emotional writing this and thinking how little respect is shown for the deceased. (very sad now) Claire x |
