Hi Dee, Your book sounds very interesting. Could you possibly look at your book for the ISBN number - it will be on the front inside cover or back inside cover or even on the back of the book itself. This will make it a lot easier to order from any bookshop (I don't live near a Tesco's) especially if it's a backdated one. Many thanks Kim |

I found my gggrandmother in gaol in 1861 she had been on trial for 2 counts of larceny and her occupation is stated as prostitute. I have yet to proove it but think she was an orphan so would have had to fend for herself. The children are scattered about in 51 though I can't find her till 61. Funny thing is her brother later went on to be a vicar. This book sounds interesting will have to look for a copy. Germaine x |

I've also heard that Brothel Keepers were often entered on census returns as Lodging House Keepers and I've got one of those who happened to live in Carlisle Street, Soho, in 1851, so I'm not sure what to think, especially as most of the lodgers seemed to be female! Carolyn |

Loiuse One of the trades that were taught to 'reformed' prostitues was needlecraft. Sadly they very rarely continued as seamstresses for long, finding that they could earn more money 'on the streets' Dee ;-)) A quote from the book I am the lass whose ever open arms Both day and night stand ready to recieve The fierce assaults of Briton's amorous sons. We must remember this book was written before the times when the girls could leave calling cards in phone boxes |
