I went to the same school as Zoe, so not surprisingly, have the same motto! SAPERE AUDE - Dare To Be Wise although I'm not sure I lived up to it.... Carole |

Tenax Propositi Vinco - Holding fast to my purpose, I conquer A mixed grammar school in the '60s and Jacqui, we wore our uniform just like you describe, except once a term when the deputy head made all us girls kneel on hte benches in the changing rooms to check that our skirts reached our knees. (Yes, we rolled the waistbands over again as soon as she'd finished) |

I think our school motto was 'put that fag out and get to my office!' The headmaster was always saying it to me!! |

I know we had one (it was embroidered on the badges on our blazers and berets) but for the life of me I cannot remember it - I can remember using every trick in the book to ensure that no one actually saw either badge - bouffant hair styles to cover the berets (with the badge totally obliterated) and blazers discarded after the 1st term in the first form!! Skirt waist bands turned over to ensure hem above the knee, tie knotted (just) and know pulled down to mid-chest level! I still have my school scarf though, even after 40+ years (I must give it a wash - lol lol) Jacqui |

The second secondary school I went to has the motto orando laborando which means by work and by prayer. |

Just realised, reading through the posts that this was a common motto! Didn't know that the words were by Kipling though. Interesting. Allie x |

Ours was 'Non Nobis Domine' (not unto us oh Lord!) for some reason. We had a song of this title going something like : Non Nobis Domine, not unto us oh Lord The praise and glory be to any deed or word. For in thy judgement lies to crown or bring to nought All knowlege and device which man can seek or wrought. (no idea!) Used to sing this at speech day with great gusto, just like something out of 'The Four Mary's' (anyone remember them?) Allie |

Drummed into us from day one Nisi Dominus Frustra Unless the Lord is with us all is in vain. On our school badge which was attached to a very unflattering bright green blazer with a white trim! Helen |

Ours was 'RISE UP - ACHIEVE' (To date, I've managed it eight times at least, to start with - but who is counting ?) The school is now demolished (probably on the orders of some 'suit' whose brother was a developer so somebody achieved something !). |

School motto, embroidered on our blazer badges was Semper Fidelis, which means Always Faithful. Spookily our school song was Non Nobis Domine (Not Unto Us O Lord) too! It was only fairly recently that I found out the words had been written by Rudyard Kipling. nell |
