I've had two budgies named Joey and one called Beano. Only other pets have been a black Cocker Spaniel called Basil, who turned out to be a real nutcase, just like the Fawlty one he was named after, and a brown, tan and white crossbreed (foxhound/pointer) called Pippin. My son once kept goldfish in a tank in his bedroom and decided to name them after deserts, so there was Gobi, Kalahari, Arizona and Sahara. He's never explained why. I've cared for several wild birds and animals that I've found injured in our garden or near our home. Among those were - Hoppy - a one-legged pigeon with half a beak, who I used to hand-feed daily Bess - a female squirrel, who first came to us looking very thin and bedraggled on a Sunday (so she was Sunday Bess), who used to enjoy sitting on our laps and be fed with nuts Peggy (Pegleg) - a female blackbird with one broken leg, who used to eat seeds from my hand Robin and Marian - a pair of robins who nested under our old carport and used to eat from our hands. Subsequently, all their descendants also used the carport for nesting, although none were ever that tame. Pickles - a very young hedgehog I found on the pavement beside my car one day and took in to nurture. My son was young at the time and when I said he should look closely at the animal's prickles, he misheard and asked if it's name was Pickles and then there was Saddam - a male blackbird who was a vicious tyrant with all the other garden birds for months, until a cat got hold of him. He wasn't in very good shape afterwards, but we managed to ensure he was fed and had water and shelter. Eventually, he got quite tame, but he disappeared one day and we've never seen him since. Mine are all named after rock stars! My girls (and me) are very into Bon Jovi, hubby's a Queen fanatic, hence: Four fish: John, Ritchie, Tico, & David !! (Blushes with embarassment, and is glad she doesn't have to shout out the back door for them!!!) 2 kittens: Freddie, after the man himself, and Delilah after one of his cats. One of our previous cats was Oscar, also named in honour of one of Freddie's! Years ago we had a brindle cross-breed dog, with a white flash of fur on his head so we called him Gizmo. Debbie |
