East Point

East Point Report 22 Mar 2006 14:22

Sorry - just remembered another one at junior school. We had a coal fire in the classroom and the caretaker used to bring the bottles of milk up in a crate and in the Winter used to stand it in the hearth to warm up - ugh!

I loved junior school. I remember queuing up for a spoonful of Cod-liver oil and Malt and the teacher holding out the spoon and plopping it into our mouths. I loved it! Later they changed it to capsules which I hated.

Harry I was sat in asembly on monday - primary school - and the head was waffling on about things that 'keep us safe'. Children were putting up hands and offering suggestions. One little chap, about 10 said 'the air raid siren'!! lol head trying hard not to laugh explained that the kid had been learning about WW2. Best assembly in weeks lol Claire

Some very good stuff there. Any of the fellows remember 'highest up the wall'. Being made to stand in a corner; Believe it or not we used to walk to school - on our own. Again for the older ones, whenever a warship went down (Hood etc) we used to sing 'eternal father strong to save.......' the next morning. Very sad looking back, but it was popular hymm and quite emotive in an innocent way. Happy days

Parafin heaters! I can still smell them, and the teacher used to put bottles of milk on top in winter to warm them. Outside loos, yeugh! Learning to write with a slate and chalk, then when you could form numbers and letters you got a pencil! Learning to do 'joined-up' writing, with a nib pen (no fountain or cartridge) just a nib on the end of a piece of pencil shaped wood, and you dunked it in the ink-well and blotted with your blotting paper! Then.... when you went to wherever after you 11 plus you got a fountain pen, and if you were lucky and stayed on, you got a cartridge pen! The cows in nearby fields getting into the playground, and worst of all one coming into the hallway! Going for 'nature-study' lessons in those fields, and getting shoes covered in 'cows clap'. And... during a really bad snowy winter in the 60's the school having to close, and the lollipop man carrying the tiny ones across the road because the snow was so deep. The only time the school ever closed during term time, it was brilliant, the snow was so deep if you put your foot down the snow came above your wellies!! Just remembered the paper towel monitors. Just before I left junior school it switched from the old thin roller towel, ..... 'Quick, Roll it round so Miss doesn't see that we wiped the paintbrush on it' Only 1 paper towel was permitted after handwashing so monitors stood guard by the towel dispensers.

Hi, I also remember having a sleep on camp beds in the infants also cod liver oil and orange juice a spoonful every day. Never liked the milk(still don't) so was never one of those that sat up straight to get a spare bottle if there was one going. Margaret
