Best thing you can do is work out the 'WALT' - learning intention - your daughter should have this on her homework .... can usually piece a lot together from this. WALT is What We Are Learning Today. What year is she in? I can pull up the schemes of work for you so you can see the learning progression and what they're trying to get at if that would help you..... Julie

2, 9,20,35,54,77 first diff: 7, 11, 15, 19, 23 second diff: 4 this means that the sequence has the form 2n^2 (2n squared) n = 1,2,3,4,5, 6 2x1^2 = 2 2x2^2 = 8 2x3^2 = 18 2x4^2 = 32 2x5^2 = 50 2x6^2 = 72 these numbers are n-1 away from the numbers in the sequence so the sequence is y = 2n^2 + (n-1) 2 + (1-1) = 2 8 + (2-1) = 9 18 + (3-1) = 20 32 + (4-1) = 35 50 + (5-1) = 54 72 + (6-1) = 77

daughter says thank but can we phone a friend again. Determine a formula for the general term of the sequence 2, 9,20,35,54,77

Caroline

Caroline Report 22 Mar 2006 19:45

Germaine is right, jusr re read the question y = 11X - 6

Germaine

Germaine Report 22 Mar 2006 19:45

16 +11 =27 first 5 in sequence. 5 16 27 38 49 I think that is right. Germaine x Whoops forgot about formulas hated algebra.

Caroline

Caroline Report 22 Mar 2006 19:44

ok, the difference between 16 and 27 is 11. This is a constant for the sequence so the general formula is y=11x+5 where x=1,2,3,4,5 etc (or whatever letters your daughter has been told to use)

Gulp!

the 2nd and 3rd terms of a sequence are 16 and 27. The difference between successive terms in the sequence is always constant. a) Determine the general formula for the sequence b) Calculate the first 5 terms of the sequesnce

In case it helps (it helped me) i found this example: e.g. In the sequence 4, 7, 12, 19, 28, the first differences are 3, 5, 7, 9, and the second differences are 2, 2, 2, In the sequence 1, 7, 17, 31, 49, -; the first differences are 6, 10, 14, 18, -; and the second differences are 4, 4, 4, -; Liz
