we had a man walked round every sunday selling crumpets out of an old battered pushchair, we used to toast them on the coal fire, i only mentioned to Joy on saturday about Bunty comic with the cut out doll to dress,we saw the dolls for sale, It taje us an hour from where we live to get to thhe seaside,when i was little it took hours and we always stopped halfway and dad would get out a primus stove at make a brew up cor i feel old now (again) |

So you had the pop man in Yorkshire too Janet..........he certainly got around lol...... Saturday, was the highlight of the week waiting for him, jumping up and down, asking mum and dad how many bottles we could get, usually ended up with six at a time, but had to make them last all week...............fantastic!!! Ooh yes Lin - friday night was the pop man's night and we used to get dandelion and burdock. Anyone remember 'ginger beer plants' with yeast and ginger, where you made your own? Jay |

Milkman with his milk churn and ladle. Coal man who had coal briquettes as well as coal on his cart. Gas street lamp man used to come and light the lamps at dusk. Sue |

Also remember the 'knocker up man' would come around and tap on the bedroom window, shouting 6 o clock and all's well....in other words, get up you lazy b*ggers lol. The gas lamps, man would come along and light them up. Anyone remember the lorries that used to come round every Saturday selling all kinds of drinks....lemonade, limeade, raspberry ade, t*zer, orangeade, ginger beer etc, etc. Fanlights, over the window and chunky glass (usually green) blocks, which were used as foot raisers for furniture, like dressers. remember when the postman knew everyone on his round---there was no chance of your post being delivered to someone else, i don't think some of todays postmen can read! many a time mine goes to someone else and they come and deliver it! or i get someone elses! |

In London there used be an Italian firm with yellow lorries which used to sell big blocks of ice to the shops Gas street lamps the news paper seller 'Star,News and Stanard'!! |

i rememmber the mud larks at Portsmouth habour,they would be stripped down to their bathers crawling about in the mud,people walking along the jetty to the ferry boats would throw old pennies /half pennys into the mud were the mud larks would try to find them,i bet they made a mint! |

Well Chris - you're older than I thought!! LOL. Remember a bloke called Mr Sumner who came round on a 3 wheeled thingy selling liquid soap. PS I also remember stop me and buy one (later transposed to 'buy me and stop one'.) NAUGHTY!!!!!! |
