Dawnie, My memories of the Rye didn´t include sunbathing!!! Was at Wycombe High from 1958 - 1964 - really didn´t enjoy my time there - went on to High Wycombe College of Technology and Art (as it was known in those days) - much more fun - and then first job was as a medical secretary at Wycombe General Hospital. Elaine Yes the Rye is still there with the pool, memories of sunbathing on the stone steps there and the cafe had to go up those steps. What year were you at Wycombe High as my sister went there

This thread has caused me such grief. I have 2 but can only find info for my one in Totterdown, Bristol. I'm certain I have another one in Pensford, Somerset but I just can't find the sheet.

FOUND IT! - it was The Beech Tree at knaves Beech, Loudwater. Wonder if we ought to try and organise a GR pub crawl - just to discover our roots, of course LOL

Just found another - the Jolly Butcher in Farnham Royal, near Eton, was run by the husband of one of my Northumberland publican's daughters. he had a side line - as a butcher. So that will be a pint of your best & a nice piece of rump please landlord

My g-granddad ran the Engin in Walsall, but it's gone now, and a gg Aunt ran the Stand Tavern also in Walsall, it is now called the Starting Gate, and I have ran 2 pubs, one in Portsmouth The Sire Loin of Beef (other wise known as the SLoB) and the Spring Head Tavern in Darlaston, so I think the pub trade is well and truly in the blood. My Great Great Great Grandfather Howe was a Publican but i discovered that in them days it didnt necessarilymean he ran a Public House. He in actual fact could just have had a licence to sell alcohol from his house. I also have a Great Grandfather in another line who was a Barman. It was in Fulham in 1906 at the time of my grandfathers birth. Fi x

I've got several, run by different generations of the same family, including one called the House of Commons (guess the landlord's name LOL) in Harbottle, Northumberland. As far as I can make out, only the Rose & Thistle, Alwinton, is still there, and by all accounts thriving.

My husband's great-grandfather and 3 of his sons ran the PAKENHAM Arms on the corner of Pakenham Street & Calthorpe Streets in Islington, it's quite near the Family Records Centre. I have various folk lodging in pubs and also a great-grandmother whose Aunt Nancy Brewer was - appropriately - a beer seller. Also have two great-uncles who ran pubs after they retired from the police force. one of them was in the CROWN in Northwold, Suffolk and the other was either the BLACK HORSE or the WHITE HORSE in Hertford. nell
