I just PM'd polly as I didn't want to take over the thread but, my dad's mum was from Edinburgh. Family legend is we come from author R.M Ballantyne and his uncles The Ballantyne Brothers, publishers of Sir Walter Scott. Have to look into that legend but it has been passed down from at least 2 sides of the family.

Other reason was the site of the public gallows! Ballantyne - nothing springs to mind, apart from it's the name of a Distillery!

Think he's called after it, Polly!! Area dates back to Oliver Cromwell's days - there were barracks there and the clock tower still stands.
