Good point Heather.. LOL Jean.. it is in a little glass bottle, watch out for it, and if you don't see it. Then ask her why she doesn't wash her hands! I would. Deanna X

its not only the washing of hands, its the lack of proper towels that irks me...........I read somewhere that using the hot air driers is next to useless, be cause the water dries on the hands, instead of being wiped off, PLUS what about the door handles at the exit to the loos? do you also wash your hands AFTER opening the door? The '' Rancid Toads '' have used those handles, before you..... Bob

Us girlies at work had the same question for the lads... the basin in the mens is filthy... with dust!! What does that say! Tina

I always wash after going to the loo but the comment about the door handles could turn me into someone with an obsessive disorder! Ali x

Every time! And I pull down my sleeve over my hand when opening the door afterwards. We now have a cafe and obviously hands are washed loads of times but you can see the ones who are reluctant - sorry but they don't last, don't care how capable they might be. We also have a burger van and use a special gel all the time, more because of handling raw food, then maybe rolls. But it recommends that hands are washed after it's been used about 6 times. Even if we're in a field we have a water pump and drainage system. There's really no excuse. Our staff are not allowed to travel to work in their work clothes - that is a diktat from Environmental Health. How many times have you seen medical staff outwith their clinics/wards in their work clothes? Christine

Yes, I always wash my hands - afterwards. However, while on the subject, I was amazed when I visited an old people's home not so long ago. There was none of that liquid, alcohol, hand wash like they have in hospitals. I questioned it and was told the homes were responsible for buying their own whereas in hospitals it's provided by the NHS. So, what's the problem? These nursing homes must 'earn' enough to be able to buy their own surely. I was horrified!

Gel we use costs £95 plus vat for 12 bottles, but it does last quite a long time. As I said, there is no excuse.

I was once on a course at an engineering factory, and the instructor asked if any of us were 'management' Dont lie he said because we watch you go to the loo......... Engineers wash hands BEFORE they go.......... Management afterwards......... I suppose that the theory was that the mechanics 'tools' were not at dirty as the job they were doing........?

Only time I wash my hands before going to loo, is if I feel it warrants it i.e, knowing my hands are dirty. Can't tolerate anyone who doesn't wash their hands after a visit to the loo and, if I witness it, would not fail to say something or get them told. Disgusting habit! Jen

Every time without fail. Public toilets are a great insight into how clean people are. I'm astounded by the number of people who don't wash their hands after going to the toilet. Yuck!! Louise

I always do! It's minging when people don't. When I managed a bar in town we used to have to put a new pump action soap in the ladies every week. In the mens it only needed replacing once a month!!!!. Our customers were mainly Men so I got to the point where if I saw a guy coming out of the toilet still doing his flies up I would say Oi you didn't wash your hands and embarrass them into going back and washing them. I didn't want them handing me their money with there dirty hands!!!

Rachel Report 23 May 2006 22:37

I always wash my hand and always with soap (water allone is not washing! the bacteria just go for a swim and land back on your hands) If there is no soap available, I will rinse my hand in water to ensure there is no physical dirt, dry then and then apply alcohol gel. I'm compulsive now about washing my hands (a hazard of traing to be a nurse and having Infection Control drummed into you constantly), most people must think I'm insane as I ensure that I don't miss any part of my hands. (you'd be supprised how poorly you wash your hands if you could see the bacteria) Jean, Most places have gone over to useing alcohol gel as it does a better job then any soap ever could. Also if the phlabotanist/ nurse uses gloves, then they get changed between patients so they don't tend to wash each time. If your concerned you can always ask them to wash there hand again and they should do it. If they refuse you always have the option to report them.

Germaine I always line the Toilet Seat with Toilet Paper, thought I was unusual. What I can never understand is the mums who come into the Toilets with kids and dont even make them wash their hands either.
