We moved house last year and inherited an orignal patio (40 plus years old, not antique just old) with broken and missing mortar between lots of the slabs. We were going to replace it but aren't rushing - the previous owners allowed plants like mint and camomile to grow in the cracks. The mint especially is wonderful - it doesn't grow very big and there is a minty aroma when stepped on which we love. Mint in several varieties has been around in garden centres for months and I don't think it matters too much when its planted. Same with camomile. My sister has alyssum (white and yellow) in cracks between her paving stones at a couple of places on her patio too and it looks good - a summer bedding plant that you can buy around now I believe. Polly, if you have any problem getting them let me know - I'll be in Fort William on Sunday and likely other days as well or can leave them at Linnhe for you to pick up. |
