When I saw on Ceefax 'Rooney and Hargreaves to face Sweden' I thought that was the end for me watching this World Cup. All the other teams have 11. It is supposed to be a team game and I don't think the media have grasped that. Neither has Rooney. He left his side one down for an hour - no excuses!! Keith

Jean, You can just imagine it can't you. Judge, 'Has the defendent anything to say?' 'Yes m'lud. It was a complete accident. The geezer pushed his nuts up towards my metal tarsil, which as you know was broke only a few weeks ago, and in accidential self defence, I pushed my foot down to avoid further damage.' LOL Derek is absolutely right. We need a TEAM, and a team always perfoms better than the sum of the individuals in it.

can`t play football around superstars(or so called). football is a team game not who has biggest name. especially trying to play superstars out of position. the balance of team,is more important than who actually plays. derek

gotta disagree Peter not a Rooney fan but he did'nt stomp on his nuts with intention ,jeez he was falling over the geezer .

Lil The difference could be that I watched the match today. Next time they show a replay watch Rooney's trailing leg as he steps over the player on the ground and then tell me it was an accident. Regards Jean x.

Rooney deserved a red card and yes, It is said by many that I have a vast knowledge about most things, especially footballers wages.

Absoulate crap jeez enough for me , I can except losing but to say Rooney deserved a red card is like saying Ronaldo never dives .

Bendy Report 1 Jul 2006 20:39

Rooney fully deserved his sending off. I feel sorry for Beckham who probably won't get to play in another world cup.

Hi Peter when you say they one presumes you mean the footballer players and not the officials , meaning that you have a vast knowledge about football ????

Jean Durant

Jean Durant Report 1 Jul 2006 20:36

What Wayne Rooney did was completely out of order. He deliberately stepped on a player on the ground. The ref did not spot this so Ronaldo decided to put his tupennyworth in and tell the ref. Rooney naturally incensed pushed Ronaldo, which the referee did see, and sent him off. Football stopped being a sport when big money came into the game. Now it is about winning at all costs. England have underachieved in each match in this World Cup not for the want of good players but because its so called manager was completely inept. Word on the street is that Sven now moves to another lucrative job at Real Madrid. Good riddance to him and good luck to Real Madrid they will need it. What England needs is a complete change at the F.A. perhaps then the players and us will get the manager we deserve. Jean x.

They are a waste of overpaid space and it is about someone stood up and said so. If Rooney was set up then more fool him. It serves him right for falling for it.

Saints Alive Report 1 Jul 2006 20:12

Ronaldo is a cheat we all know that , he conned the Ref and he also conned Man Utd by saying he wants to play at Real Madrid instead of Old Trafford now , so no change there then. Rooney is a good and overpaid player , but did not deserve a red card for the tackle . Owen Hargreaves played his arse off and was man of the match for me . Thought the ref was not up to the standard expected We lost but well done the lads

Yes, exactly what I had predicted - Rooney being sent off. When I watched Portugal playing the Netherlands I said I hope Rooney doesn't play for England against Portugal as he will be sent off. He is hot headed at the best of times. Yes, he let his team mates down badly. For the rest I think England played quite well with only 10 men, (with David Beckham and Michael Owen being non active).

I'm not up with all the latest footballers in England but watched the match but I think it was an unnecessary sending off.... and would say the same if it had been the other way round.... Renaldo should have left it to the Ref who IMO was going to dish out a yellow card but Renaldo butted in and caused the sending off. There were a lot of Oscars won today and mostly they were Portuguese.... so they won all the honours..... mmmm Good thread .... good debate..... nice to see!! Jacquie xxxx

So winding up the person with the short fuse is good sportsmanship...(??) Somehow that doesn't sound like sport to me. Linda
