Hi Sharon, I took a 10mg tablet once for my shoulder pain and to be honest I was out for the count till lunch time, I just put it down to not being used to them but with having four kids and a disabled hubby I couldnt afford to be asleep all day! My hubby was like a zombie at first but his body must have got used to all the medication as he isnt too bad now. Didnt know about the weight gain thing though, maybe thats why he is heavier than he was and I thought he just ate more cos he is at home all day. Marie: ) |

Sharon, I have been on Amitriptyline for 3yrs--and you have to take it a good 2wks before any real reaction[from a patients point of view]. i use it for nerve pain. Yes it does make you feel very groggy[not good if you are looking after children] Yes it does make you weight gain [ to much] helenx |

Hi, my hubby takes 2 x 25mg of amitriptyline everynight for chronic pain, he usually wakes up very groggy, he also takes tramadol and codipar so maybe with all three thats why hes groggy! Marie: ) |

Hi Helen Have to take 1 10mg tab every night, an hour or two before bed. If after 5 days there has been no improvement, I have to double that. S x |

Hi Sharon My husband has just been prescribed them for a similar reason - he started getting migraines a few years ago but just recently has been getting up to 3 or 4 a week. Although the Amitriptyline have made him sleepier than normal, he's had no other side effects at all, and his migraines have decreased greatly. I also have Amitriptyline, but for a different reason. I have another condition which sometimes causes my sleep pattern to go haywire, so I take the Amitriptyline for two nights in a row and I sleep very well! A list of side effects are always quite scary, but of course the pharmaceutical company have to list all the possible ones just to be on the safe side. Don't worry about getting them all - you might even be lucky and not get any. Good luck! Mandy x |

Thanks Dawnie There does seem to be a common theme in different peoples experiences, about putting on weight - I seem to be able to do that easily enough before taking the medication, so will just have to hope that it doesn't get too out of hand. I have noticed some diet threads on the board, so look out for me asking for more help in the very near future! S x |

Hi Jennifer Apparently it's the fact that it relaxes muscles that helps with pain relief - has an effect on nerve endings. I don't sleep well when I'm stressed either ( which is a lot of the time ) so that could be another reason why I've got it. I'm sorry that it hasn't worked so well for you - is there no alternative? Hi I've been on and off it for years. I take one at night to help me sleep, as any stress and I just stop sleeping. It dosen't really help me now but if I don't take it I sleep even less well. I know someone who just has to take one and he sleeps for about 18hours!! Its never had that affect on me. I did put weight on but I don't know whether I can entirely blame that on the tablets!! I.m not sure how it would help relieve pain |

I try and avoid it but it keeps following me and it would be rude to say no....... Seriously though, you do have to be careful. I get rat ar**ed on two G&T's these days. OH thinks it's great cos I'm a cheap round now :) |

Hi Sue Only just been diagnosed today. I had thought that once school had broken up for the summer, things would improve, but it hasn't been the case - I'd just put it down to being one of the joys of working with kids!! My GP is really good, and I do have an appt to see him again in 3 wks, but def will ask about herbal options - I hate taking medication, even just Ibuprofen. Many thanks S x |

I was given it for acute back pain. Didn't suit me as although it helped with the pain I felt like I was on another planet. Very groggy and hungover - without the pleasure of gin - and I piled on the weight. Keep an eye on it yourself and if after a few weeks you are not happy go back to your GP. Only you knows what your body feels like and all drugs have a different effect on individuals. Am now on a mix of Tramadol, paracetamol and Nefopam which work well for me. Unfortunately with chronic pain it is a case of trial and error.... Good luck and keep smiling :) |

Sharon - It's not a foregone conclusion that you will put weight on (although I can see that gleam in your eye that says SHOPPING! LOL) I think anything that gets rid of pain is worth a try. Lists of possible side effects can be horrifying - but each may be because just one case in thousands has experienced it. It still has to be recorded to safeguard the manufacturer. Btw - I think a whole class of 5 year olds is enough to give anyone a headache! Mags xx |
