Nudge for Susan. Joe, there is a petition which has been going on for some time as you said, but this is another one. There are comments put on this thread in tips which have left Susan feeling 'stomped on' to use her words. Please, although we all have differing opinions on this, there is no need to shoot someone down in flames for thiers. It's an idea, thats all, and there is no harm in trying to get something achieved for the good of others. Susan is only trying to support her friend in this. Lets have a little respect here and share our opinions and ideas politely. 'If ya can't say nuttin nice, don't say nuttin at all' (Thumper in Bambi)

This petition has been on-going for years now - it is not something new. Thousands of people have probably already signed and it will make no difference to decision already taken. As has been said already here, to even get this off the ground they would have to start working now on a five year project which means that it is not going to get here before 1912 anyway - save your breath, ink and whatever else there is no way this will get here before 1912 now. There is enough information online 1902 - 1911 now for you to be able to build your tree.

Worth signing, even if it only prompts them to get started on the work needed to get it out on time.

At least it's trying to get some momentum going and to make feelings known. Why oh why do people always have to pour cold water on others efforts! I have signed and thank you Susan for telling us about it.

If the Government broke its promise and released this census early, it would ensure that any future census would be a waste of time - those with something to hide, would not answer the questions honestly, rendering it useless as a source for genealogists. OC

Last I heard, work hasn't even started on it yet.

Why oh why don't people realise that filming and digitising the 1911 census is a mammoth task. It will be released on 1st Jan 2012 (if it's ready on time). It would be impossible to release it earlier, the time scale just isn't there.

Susan And you are going to have to pay to see this one too! What I meant was, a donation to the Government to help them pay for more Staff to do the work needed BEFORE it can be released. And please don't mention Benjamin's census thread on Records - its been running for 2 years now and he has already stated that he does not know where to send it. OC

I would pay to see the 1911 cencus....as I already pay to view all the other cencus records! It is a lovely idea of this man to do this....and at least if it doesnt get anywhere. The people who did sign can say they tried! Susan......:((((

It might be more effective to start a Subscription List, of those who are prepared to PAY for the early release of this census. OC

Alan that does not mean we have to give up and accept this decision. If we all had a defeatist attitude like that we would still be paying poll tax!

Alan

Alan Report 19 Aug 2006 12:38

I wouldn't bother. The government have already decided NOT to listen to anyone on this subject. If every person researching their family in the UK were to sign it, it would have NO effect. They have already stated that it will be released on time and not before.

I have been looking into this more and more and there are so many facts that actually demonstrate that the Government is treating Genealogists extremely badly! Just by way of example: In Northern Ireland both the 1901 Census and the 1911 Census was released in 1960; The Freedom of Information Act 2005 removed the restrictions placed on the release of information and the requirements of this Act are being ignored; Prior to 1911 the average release period for Census Returns was 80 years. So rather than just talking about it I have decided to take Action! We have set up a Petition to be submitted to the Government to see if we can get them to reconsider! http://www(.)cookgenealogy(.)com/phpPETITION/ (remove the brackets) :-)
