Mine is Brynmynach - mynach in Welsh is Monastry, bryn is hill. apparently in the 12th century there was a monastry in the town where I live and our street would have overlooked it, being on the hillside above - hence brynmynach. Dorothy |

To Teresa W Born and bred in Stockport till we moved away 30 years ago. Last Thursday my daughter and I revisited the town looking up parish records, grave hunting and taking in some of the historical sites that when one is young is oblivious of. Talk about a coincidence...we were looking at the statue to your GGG Uncle Richard Cobden on St Petersgate and had a drink in the nearby pub now called Cobdens. Ooooer how wierd is that lol. Linda |

Our street name is Bessemer. The housing estate was built on the site of a school which was originally called after the name of the road it stood on, but then changed to Bessemer after Henry Bessemer, inventor of the Bessemer steel process (don't ask, I didn't do metal work), who was born in a hamlet outside Hitchin. There's a Bessemer road in Stevenage where our milkman used to be based, and a Bessemer road in Welwyn Garden City near where my husband worked once, so its quite popular locally. nell |

Not an ancestor but my cousin's husband and a colleague built a couple of houses in a very small street and named them after him - Wolfall Terrace. My Aunt and Uncle live just across the road and round the corner from the Terrace! Lyn x |

Im from ' Prestwich ' in Manchester , a good many of the street names were given in honour of the local church - St Mary's I.E Rectory Avenue Rectory Grove Rectory Green Rectory Lane Bannerman Avenue Church Lane Even the meaning of the name ' Prestwich' is Priest's Retreat. By the way - most of Coronation Streets weddings are filmed at this church ( just thought i'd add that bit of information ) |

two of my sisters live in a small town in Northern Ontario. all the streets are names - lets see best explained as follows: all streets north to south are named: 1st street, 2nd street, 3rd etc. all the ones running east to west are: 1st Avenue, 2nd Avenue, 3rd. etc. must have been a rocket scientist on the planning committee for street naming. lol |

Part of the estate i live on is an old air field used during WW2, so the streets are all named after raf stations - big connection round here to the raf. Also the estate i grew up, every street was named after a village in the county - some really wierd ones lol |

Lots of streets in Coventry named after people, including former mayors and aldermen so probably not difficult to find family connections. On Newfoundpool in Leicester there are streets whose initial letters spell out the name of the builder: Ingle Street Hawthorne Street Alma Street Rowan Street Ruby Street Ivanhoe Street Sylvan Street Oban Street Newport Street My Dad grew up in Alma Street and he told me about this years ago. Our road is named after a village in the Cotswolds Sheila |

Just an observation - on a site where potentially it is possible to find out quite a lot about people including things like mother's maiden name (!) it may not be wise to give out the actual name of the street where you currently reside. Boring bit done (lol) - the name for mine is very boring because it refers to the place it leads to - in fact most of them do around here. |

Our road is named after the big grade II listed house that stands opposite the end of the road. Where I was brought up (built early 20th century) the roads were all named after trees, Poplar, Vine, Cherry, Linden, Maple, and so on. |

Spare a thought for our postman, the roads round where we live don't have names, and most people don't have a name or number on the house. Rosalind |

Errol, a valid point, perhaps I should have mentioned that in my original post. I have noticed that several places have streets named after trees, both near me here and near where I was born, guess is is an easy option for the planners Dee ;-)) |
