Really enjoyed this, very thoing the war thought provoking, a change from seeing just the cheery way everyone was percieved to have 'coped', during the war years. The husband was the spite of my grandad, in looks, not manner! my grandparents married in 1942, this programme gave me a realistic feel of how things would have been for them. More of this, and less of that 'reality' rubbish!!!

I was really looking forward to this, but was disappointed. Despite Sky breaking up continuously, I did pick up on the following: 1, The iron railings remained in tact, when they were taken to make ammunition (certainly in London they were). 2. People driving around in cars - when petrol was scarce. 3. She made a cake, where did she get the eggs, butter and sugar on rations? I was not in the war and don't know a lot about it, but the points above stand out to me. Maybe it was different in the North.

HI SYLV, WE THINK SO, FRENCH CORNWALL THERE IS A LINK BETWEEN CORNWALL AND BRITTANY. ONCE OVER THE BLACK MOUNTAINS AND FURTHER SOUTH IT GETS WARMER. ( NOT TOO HOT LIKE THE S OF FRANCE ). CARNAC, IS FAMOUS FOR IT'S STANDING STONES ETC., MORE IMPRESSIVE WE THINK THAN STONEHENGE. WE HAVE FOUND A LITTLE WALK, WHICH TAKES YOU THROUGH A WOODED PATH AND THERE ARE HUGE STONES ALONG THE WALK. YOU CAN SIT / CLIMB / TOUCH THEM. PICNIC ON THEM DEPENDING ON THEIR SIZE. NORMANDY IS NICE ALSO, MAINLY FOR THE BOYS AND THEIR MILITARY INTERESTS. BAYEUX TAPESTRY IS WORTH SEEING. PIPS XX

I was slightly disappointed - I don't think it really showed what ordinary people went through, queueing for hours to get food and making a meal out of nothing - they were all so well-dressed, no make do and mend in evidence, nice shiny shoes etc. BUT - if it is a choice between watching this or watching some tenth rate celeb eating maggots in the jungle, then I vote for more of VW, or anyone else doing a similar thing - it was nice and gentle and inoffensive - true Sunday Night Entertainment! Hi Pip again! Sorry for the delay. Mmm, Britanny sounds just my kind of thing. Speaking of woods, there's an amazing walk in North Devon through to a place called Bucks Mills. Through very ancient forests and woods. Trees that tower above you and everything bathed in green. Magical! Sylvx

The stockings were dreadful – I still have a knee injury because of those stockings. “I think they must have been designed for a shorter person because they were on a very tight tension with the suspenders and I had to wear them Nora Batty style when I thought no-one could see – or it was a rare case of knee-capping by stockings!”.............VICTORIA WOOD JUST BEEN READING ABOUT HOUSEWIFE 49. I KEPT WONDERING WHO THE ACTOR WAS, I RECOGNISED THE VOICE......IT WAS DAVID THRELFALL...THE FATHER IN SHAMELESS ( CH 4 ). VICTORIA'S FIRST ITV DRAMA, IN 25 YRS AND HER SECOND SERIOUS ROLE.

(Hi Rox.. thanks for the lovely card!) I must say, i thoroughly enjoyed it, i even let my daughters watch it, although on late as they wanted to watch it too. putting minor continuity discrepancies aside, i thought it was very well made... considering it wasnt a big budget movie but a small budget made for TV drama. Well done Victoria Wood.. a very talented actresss and writer, i would love her to do more of this sort of thing.. it reminded me slightly of Goodnight Mr Tom.. another smashing drama for TV that was .
