Hi all ,i would just like to add that i think lack of cover has a lot to do with the problem with lack of birds in a small garden. I used to have more birds than i knew what to do with until i removed the Honeysuckle because of the green and black fly that used to attack it. I shot myself in the foot ,because not only did i remove the bird refuge ,but also removed a good food sourse for the tits and spuggies. The hangers ,and bird tables are great because birds using them can see a cat long before it gets anywhere near, and they will sit on top of my birdhouse ,and taunt the cats ,knowing they are safe..Fred.

LL. Why not invest in a proper 'Feeding Table'? you can get one from most pet shops or garden centres, other than that have a look at one and make one yourself, they,re quite easy to make. Hal.

Ok everyone, Got one of those metal hanging posts, for the birds, and husband put it in garden today. So far I have peanuts, mixed seeds, fat balls, coconut shell thing, and this square greasy thing with fruits and nuts in, oh and some water. I decided against a table because of the cats. I am well chuffed with the hanging thingy, as it has 'extra things for water and seeds etc, and was cheaper than the one from argos. So, I am hopeing that within a week I may have some birds in my garden. Oh Buggs...If you are reading this, can you tell me WHERE to by those mealworms in a can please? Also, do squirels and birds get on ok as neighbour also gets one that comes now and then? Its a big one so not young. and wouldnt mind it comming so long as it doesnt harm birds. So, many questions, sorry. lol LL

I have Blue Tits and a variety of other birds in my garden, I put feeders on bushes on my washing line also on a hook close to the wall the birds feed from all of them, have you tried wild bird feeding balls they go mad on them, good luck.

LL we had blue tits nesting the year before last in our nest box,but no takers last year at all. They have been around but as yet no takers.also not as many birds as we used to have--no change in feeding them,so I wonder if someone else is giving better grub and they are going there. We do have a Robin,Blackbirds, sparrows and starlings and we useed to have greenfinches. So keep on feeding them.

Lady Report 23 Mar 2007 20:45

Well, had loads of Starlings, the odd pigeon, oh and one robin for a split second, plus a couple of visits by the tits, that still seem to prefer my neighbours tree to my new hanging thingy. LL

Hello Carol Love, I used to go bird watching with my hubby when youngest son was only a nipper. I should be grateful I am getting any birds, but really like the little bluetits and robins. Mind, the garden isn't a garden as such more of just a patio I suppose. LL

Hiya joan, Where I live there is a 'middle bit' that has grass and trees. We all pay a fee every year for the gardener to keep it tidy etc. So despite having such a tiny garden, I suppose birds do come around especially the magpies. We Have a squirrel, wich has even been in neighbours garden for the nuts etc, and my husband used to see a fox quite regular in the street when he was on his way to work at 4 am. He hasn't mentioned the fox for ages though now so maybe its moved on. But, I was thinking, if all these birds and animals are around, surely its only a matter of time before I can get them right into MY garden? LL

Lady Lucan, just had one of those moments of inspiration! It just occurred to me that my blue-tits are especially fond of sitting on my Tamarisk/Tamarix (it's a shrub) sprays of tiny pink flowers, then leaves come after, they peck either at the buds or some insects on it,not sure which. It would grow in a large tub, they are easy to find at garden centres or Woolies. Rosexx
