Dilemma!

Hi I have been sorting out various old paperwork and came across all the old statements for a mortgage on a house I no longer have an interest in.

Do I keep them for a period of say 10 years and destroy or should i shred the lot now ? There is a huge carrier bag of statements!

The statements date from 2004-2021.

Any suggestions or has anyone else had this dilemma?

I assume you're talking about your marital home. Has the mortgage been paid in full? If so, then I think you only need to keep the final statement, as proof, in the unlikely event that it might be needed.

If the mortgage hasn't been cleared, then you need the terms of the original mortgage, the wording of the house ownership on the Deeds and the precise terminology on the divorce settlement.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck

Andysmum raises some good points and I would speak to your solicitor, as it's in your interest to be sure.

The house went to my ex and i received a small settlement. i understand he took out another mortgage so the original that was in joint names was repaid outright.

So i have no connection to whatever mort is on the property now.

There's always the modern way, of scanning the papers then shredding all but say the first and last.

In that case I think you can start shredding. :-) :-)

Ty all for your replies.

Yep I am going to start shredding keeping the first and last statement. :-D
