Hi to all.
No more snow Florencebut none of the stuff already here has shifted, the snow & icicles have gone from the trees..

When I got up this morning there was only a small amount of water coming through the bath & sink taps & a trickle going into the toilet cistern, however after a few minutes the water flow strengthened & all was well again.

Probably the usual problem, a section of pipe that is connected to a W pressure pump, it is outside but housed in a small shed, well lagged & has extra old blankets wrapped over it but in serious freezing conditions it can still freeze, it's a right pain !!

Afternoon all from a crisp but sunny winter's day.

I hope anyone from the south west/wales etc have not been affected by the terrible storm last night. I saw some reporting on the late news and it was awful.

The Midlands got a bucket load of snow too and airports were closed.

Joan, how is your snow today? Did you get any more?

I have a bad migraine which started yesterday and i still have it today. So going to just rest and do very little in the hope it will soon pass.

Stay safe everyone and keep warm indoors.

I was down to a last one for the 2 types so I cut them in half today so as to have something for tomorrow, wasn't sure about doing that but thought it better than none !

Now that I have a new supply I can take the other halves.

That's a relief, Joan.
Two months' worth will see you safely into early Spring - one less thing to worry about!

Hello to all.
My pills have just arrived, at last, AND I have been sent 2 months worth for a change, usually only ever had 1 mths supply sent !

It's frrezing hare Linda, we have icicles hanging from our tree branches, don't recall seeing that before.

I hope your pills turn up Joan. That reminded me that I need to order ours, so I will do that after this post.
I hadn’t intended going out again, but the storm forecast is bad for this evening and tomorrow, so I went to Morrisons this afternoon rather than in the morning. The shelves were really empty, but I got most things I needed. It is bitterly cold, so I am glad to be back.

Hi Linda, daughter got my shopping so that's good, she went to the chemist to pick up the pills as arranged only to be told the del guy had left with them !!
Daughter told chemist person that there should be no problem delivering them as the road was passable & that she had used it 3 or 4 times today.

No pills as yet !!

LindainHerriotCountry Report 8 Jan 2026 11:49

I hope that your daughter gets back with all your shopping and pills Joan, you don’t seem to be having much luck recently.

I have been out to my slimming class this morning and it is still bitterly cold, only one degree. I will stay put for the rest of the day and catch up with the washing.

I read every night in bed using my kindle, but OH goes to the library and gets two books out a week. He came back with Richard Osman's Thursday Murder Club, which I have wanted to read for a while, so I have been reading that during the day I prefer my kindle for reading in bed as it is much lighter than having to hold a heavy book. I read very quickly, so get through lots of books , I have a monthly Amazon kindle subscription as it is much cheaper than buying books separately. I know that I could borrow books for free from the library , but as I prefer to read in bed , the kindle is a much better option. Not everything is included with the Amazon subscription though, the Richard Osman books being an example.

Hello Argyllgran, & thankyou for understanding.

It's hard isn't it, my hubby looked after me & kept me safe & now he's gone I find life stressful.
When I saw all the snow again today I went into panic mode, no food, no pills, what if the power goes off again, what if I take ill, daughter gets cross with me but I can't help it. I relied a lot on hubby, & he never got cross with me !

The sun has come out but there is too much snow for it to make any difference !

The news channels are not helping either, constantly banging on about the coming storm, do they not understand how worried some people get especially the elderly.
I have had to turn the tv off as they are not helping me with their weather reports !

Joan.

Oh, Names, don't mention him!
There's enough to panic about at home, without widening the scope to include world affairs!

nameslessone Report 8 Jan 2026 10:50

When we lived ‘up the hill’ I was mostly on my own with the kids. OH coming in for evening meals and going out early in the morning 6 days a week. So most things were down to me. I always said other children’s parents would be surprised that there was a father around as they never saw him ( he doesn’t drive so all pick up etc were down to me).

I don’t think you have to be on your own to catastrophy. I always worry and my brain always goes to the worst case scenario - you should have seen me before my dental appt this week. I knew the news would be bad but felt sick and goodness knows what my be was like.

And then there is Trump…….

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 8 Jan 2026 10:29

I know exactly how you feel, Joan.

Nothing used to bother me, even being on my own with three young children for months while my late OH was at sea.
But now, even though I enjoy living on my own, anything going wrong throws me into a tizzy, and I start catastrophising.

And then I panic about my blood pressure soaring because I'm panicking, so it's a vicious circle!

Oh Florence, it's a nightmare.
Daughter has come over, she managed the house road upto a point & then was on foot to the house, she has grandaughter (14) with her, they have set out for town to get some shopping etc.

I am just waiting now & worrying that they reach the shops & get back home safely.

I can't help worrying about things like this, it's scary, I'm just a "silly" old wifey when things like this happen, more so since being on my own in the house.

Hoping others looking in are ok, keep safe.

Joan.

Morning all

all clear here and the planes went today thank goodness.

Aw Joan, more snow!! I so hope you daughter manages up your road and you get your meds ok.

Names,I have loads of candles like you and plenty of bottled water too incase of emergencies. Given the rural area i live in, you always have to be prepared.

That reminds me all the rechargeable batteries that were in the xmas lights all need recharging so add that job to me list of things to do. I bought another charger that can charge 8 AA batteries at once and is fairly quick too.

Off to do some chores now but will look in this afternoon. Take care and keep warm all.

Like AG I always used to keep a little camping stove and lots of lamps and candles when we lived at our old house. It was one of a group of ‘tied’ housing and we were always losing power due to the overhead cables. A puff of wind would switch us off.
Certain weather conditions would make our oil boiler switch off.
I also kept a supply of bottled water, as the in-house maintenance teams would switch off the water just as we were all about to cook the children’s lunches. We also lived at the top of a hill.
Such a relief to leave that and buy a house down in the village. Gas heating, gas cooker and shops within a 10 minute flat walk.

Amokavid Report 8 Jan 2026 08:37

Good morning, though itis FAR from good.
We have got another shed load of snow dumped on us through the night, looking out I would guess there is at least 5 or 6 inches.

Yesterday I could once again see all the planters & seats & the roof of the house was clear of so much snow, this morning once again everything is hiddden.
My daughter is due to do my weekly shop & pick up my pills today but I don't know what the house road is like, it's not going to be easy for her.

It' has been a long time since I saw soo much snow here.

Hope evryone is ok.

Joan.

What a relief that your power came back on, Joan!

I keep a small camping gas ring in case of power cuts, along with a supply of gas canisters. Very handy!
At least then I can have a hot drink, or heat up something from my emergency stash of tinned food.

Like Florence, I have a couple of fleece blankets which are very cosy.
Solar-powered lamps and torches are also very useful. I keep them on a windowsill, so that they're always charged up in case of need.

Your chicken satay sounds tasty, Florence!
