Going on from my last post My 23 yr old son who lives at home and was a great help in the early days as he did the caring at night while I grabbed a few hrs sleep has managed to find himself a job. He has been unemployed for 2 yrs so I am happy for him. He is working 5 night a week which leaves me in the house with OH and sons pregnant gf, she hasn't had an easy pregnancy either so I feel as if I am keeping a eye on her as well.

Hello All,

Tess we did have OT booked way back in Jan when OH was really ill. We live in council property so chose there OT to come out as we needed the house adapting. There aim is 7 days. March we managed to get a new step and rails outside and handrails up the stairs so he could get himself to bed. He had slept downstairs since xmas.
OH is able to get around a bit but he tires very easily. I thought things might improve once he came off his antibotics but it hasn't. He is still sleeping 16 hrs a day. Even if I get him up within 5 hrs he is asleep again on the sofa.

Today he did get up at nine and we went of to the local boot sale. Back home and in bed again by 12, I woke him at 8 to get up.
I am going to send this before I get cut off, my interent is very tempermental this week.

hello all,
will post a longer update when I have a more stable internet connection, it has been playing up for a good few days now.
Also off for a walk with OH, our street is in a square shape so just doing that, maybe he might meet some neighbours to chat too.

Only just spotted this. Hope that your OH is continuing to improve Anne.

Are you getting the support you need? Not just from friends and family. Would it be worth while having an assessment by an Occupational Therapist (O.T.) Perhaps they will be able to get some equipment to make things easier for you both.

Can anyone else stay with him for a couple of hours - perhaps just sitting and chatting or even pottering in the garden. Then you can have some time to yourself to do as you choose (without worrying)

Good morning anne, it is a bright morning here so hopefully you can get out and about a bit if only into the garden. We went to the food and craft fair at the Quays yesterday despite the rain, it was ok but not as good as when it started. Hopefully the big one in two weeks will be worth going to.

I hope your OH is improving nopw and that he will be able to go back on the Simvastatin and aspirin to help prevent further strokes. I suppose if they say he had a mini stroke in October maybe the meds helped to keep it mini.

Kuros Annie, I am so pleased for your husband that his operation was a success, it must have been a terrible shock being unsuspected.

Morning Anne, hope it's bright where you are and your hubby will be feeling a bit better today so you can feel less stressed and enjoy his company and when he does rest, you can sit on your swingseat and read or do what you like.

Hello all,
Dizzi, that is good that things are moving, I know people make mistakes but me too would be worried if they were talking about the wrong leg.

Annie what a relief for you that OH has been given the all clear.

Ann . OH has had to stop taking a lot of his tablets as they don't mix with the antibotics he is taking. He has stoped what I call his stroke tablets rimpromel and sitvastion Well something like that! and asprin. He had a full blown stroke in 2008 and a mini stroke in Oct they suspect as he had two annuysums in his legs when he was scanned in feb. Also he hasn't been able to take his acid reflux tablets either. Last antibiotic taken today so back to normal tomorrow.

A friend of his is picking him up in the morning and taking him out for the day. Hooray. I'm juggling the two grandchildren around so at least I can try and have the afternoon to myself.

Oh, Anne, what a time you've had. I know exactly how you feel about people like Michael having worse problems. My hubby was diagnosed with kidney cancer last March. It was an awful shock, he wasn't even unwell. He had the tumour and the kidney removed last month and this morning he's been given the all clear from the surgeon. I cannot describe the relief!

I know what you mean about these boards. I've been here every day even though I don't post much. There are some truly wonderful people on here and I'm proud to call them friends even though I've never met most of them!

I hope that soon your good days will outweigh the bad. I don't know about you but this has certainly altered our outlook on life. Now, if there's something we want to do - and we're able to do it - we're going ahead. Life is precious and sometimes this is brought home to us in ways we couldn't have imagined. Please keep us posted.

Anne, good that you got out for time to yourself. I assume he is ok to take the antibiotics with the other medication?

It does sound as if he is depressed doesn't it, maybe why he retreats in sleep. But as Perse says that is a great healer. Maybe he is worried about having a stroke and not saying. So maybe after his stroke check up he will feel better. <3

Look after yourself, find plenty of escape routes, sit in the garden swing and talk to us.. go out have a coffee here and there. Like Gwen (Dizzi) says the person being cared for appreciates what you are doing and understands you need to have to recharge your batteries from time to time.

Someone on here mentioned sleep being a great healer, and you are to make sure you get enough sleep as well.

Hi Anne.
Good to hear you got out for a while today with a friend. It will get you down sitting in the house and that little break will do you good and refresh you for when you get back home.
I hope your OH will start to feel better when he has finished his antibiotics. Would the Tramadol make him sleepy do you know. Hope all goes well with the district nurse tomorrow and when he has a sleep in the afternoon would it be possible for you to get out for a short time then, maybe a little walk or cuppa with a neighbour or friend. Well I decided to go out today and catch up with a friend. Thought I would go in late morning have lunch with her and come back about 3 ish. that way I knew OH would probably still be in bed so didn't have to worry about him.
He finishes his antibotics tomorrow so hopefully after that he wont be so sleepy. He also said he might try and drop a tramadol and just take one every 4 hrs instead of 2 . I have mentioned it to the D/N that he says he doesn't know whats wrong but he just doesn't feel right but no one is listening. He has his annual stroke check up soon so think I shall mention it then. The last 2 weeks though he has had trouble with his nerve endings so started taking this tablet he had while in hospital...they use it now for nerve endings and twichy legs but use to be used for a anti depressant and he thinks he is feeling better, when he does eventually get up. So I am wondering if the small dose of anti depressant is doing him good.
He doesn't like being on his own so I am torn and I feel as if I am just waiting in all the time just in case he gets up.
At least today when he got up I could be cheerful because I hadn't just been sitting around all morning waiting for him to get up. D/N comes tomorrow so he will have to be up by 10........come 2 he will be asleep in the chair.

Hi Anne.
It is nice to hear you can sit in the garden on your swing seat and read. I hope you get lots of warm days to get out there when your OH is sleeping. I do hope things get better for you both very soon. <3

What a brilliant idea getting the seat in the winter, it was all settled and sorted ready for now.
We're waiting for our decking to start, it should have been 30th June this Mon, but they have put it back to 14th July...once thats done l can buy plants and seating/table etc...can't wait, not sure there will be room for a swing seat though :-|

Yep they say sleep is a good healer:) Hope you have loads of lovely veggies:)

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles, but it's good that you feel support here.

How lovely that your OH had an interest in the garden, even when he couldn't get out there and I'm pleased that it's a place of calm for you now.

Anne...they say sleep is one of the best healers, but it's nice to hear that he is enjoying his garden also.

I have also got a garden swing which I love and never sit anywhere else when I am outdoors.

Let's hope we have a good summer :-D

Thankyou for asking today, I have just managed to get onto the pc. I have had a good day today because OH has only just decided to wake up. (pc is in bedroom) Its the antibotics he is on and the pain killers so I let him sleep some days. He will watch the news for a bit then potter up the garden. Its the first time we planted some veg. when he was in hospital all he kepted saying is when I get out of here I might plant some veg. I got son just to dig up a narrow strip and OH planted sprouts, caulis, runner beans and tomatoe plants. On the days I let him sleep. Its getting the balance right on how much I let him sleep It does me good as well just to sit and read without having to worry about him. I thought I would be spending a lot of time looking after OH this year and in the winter I bought a swing seat with a shade for in the garden, (half price) all my kids laughed at me and said why you got that for its winter. They are not laughing now when I can just go and sit in the garden with my book and not worry about dragging other garden chairs into the shade.
