Well done dizzi, if nothing else you can raise awareness of the ignorance of some nurses about an illness suffered by a lot of people.

Suzanne I think the reason Dizzi has 'trouble' as you put it with nurses is because some of them have no idea of the problems that people with PD have. Maybe too with so many non UK nurses there is a language and culture problem which doesn't help communication and understanding. This does not excuse the lack of basic care and compassion.

AnninGlos Report 21 Oct 2013 11:26

Dizzi if you are on good terms with your doctor you could ask him/her for advice about whether you should have been in longer for treatment.

Hi Dizzi
Pleased to hear that you are home. You do need to take it easy though so let OH play the role of the butler. :-D
Good for you on standing your ground & making that complaint, as that nurse should not be allowed to get away with this kind of thing; it gives other good nurses a bad name. It’s is not good for patients like you’re good self or our NHS. That nurse was very unprofessional towards you. If I recall correctly, something was said about you staying in hospital for at least week when it was supposed to 33 days, & it has turned out to be 4 days, something not sounding good about that all. Maybe somebody on the boards can better advice you on this than I can, or you can seek better advice from the C.A.B. who can put you in touch with people who can help you the best way for you.

Morning I was discharged from hospital yesterday evening ,still saying its a minor heart condition ,after intravenus duretics I lost a stone in fluid over four days, still not happy with results can't keep this up every couple of months .

As for the nurse I found her full Italian name I complained to another senior nurse and when I got home emailed my complaint,
Wondered if they classed me asa trouble maker and that's why' I got discharged at that time of day,

Gwen, try not to be scared, you did the right thing by complaining and I hope you will be supported by your family to get the right treatment and care you need. If they won't speak up for you and you get more poor treatment tell 'em you will get the gr posse round to sort them out, that should get some action.

Seriously love, it's a great idea of BK to note all the things happening and then you will have no problem referring back to your notes if things have to be taken further.

Hope life is easier for you soon, and that miserable nurse gets the karma she deserves

love and hugs

how awful for you Dizzi

nurses are not allowed to lift patients incase they damage their backs, and i think most people understand that, but she could have used a hoist or a bedpan,

we are allowed to help with another nurse or healthcare, but not lift.

some nurses think its below them to help with toileting and leave it to the health carer to do.

didnt you have trouble with a nurse the last time you were in hos?
:-(

get well soon :-)

Guinevere Report 20 Oct 2013 15:09

You have to speak out, Dizzi.

When I was in hospital after having my broken leg set and still groggy from the anaesthetic a nurse told me she was "too busy" to either help me to the loo or get me a bed pan and I'd have to wait or manage on my own.

At that point my consultant arrived to talk about my op and the ironmongery he'd inserted and I complained long and loud to him. She was taken off the ward straight away. She didn't come back for the rest of the time I was there.

Some nurses are angels and some are total bitches. That's my experience. We do the angels no service by tolerating the bitches.

when I broke my hip last year one nurse would not help me at tea time to eat I could not reach the plate so when my family came I complained about her in her presence she wad taken off the ward

Don't be put off by her seeming to be popular - sometimes people who work with bullies have to be 'extra nice' to them to keep them at bay!!!

ChrisofWessex Report 20 Oct 2013 14:14

Dizzi, if she could not have got hold of another nurse quickly enough, she could have slipped a pan under you or used a portable hoist.

You were right to complain and IF you find your treatment by other nurses alters in any way - ask for Nursing Manager and request removal to another ward.

Keep notes, dates, times, names - essential.

Oh dear Dizzi <3

If you get any negative actions from anyone else about this, ask to speak to the senior nurse on duty.

OneFootInTheGrave

OneFootInTheGrave Report 20 Oct 2013 13:32

DIZZI - that kind of treatment is just not acceptable, patients deserve better treatment than that, if I was in your shoes I would ask to speak to someone from PALS (Patient and Advice Liaison Service) <3

Dizzi my God Daughters daughter N was in hospital for suspected appendicitis . I will not go into the dreadful treatment in detail (or should I say lack of treatment) she received. She was discharged two days after surgery with no discharge letter, medication or guidance on after care, when God Daughter asked nurse about painkillers she was told to give her a couple of over the counter pain killers. N had to have emergency admittance a day later, and further surgery. The nurses with the exception of one were unhelpful and gave conflicting advice, one saying do one thing, another saying do something else. Cutting an extremely long and distressing story short, my God Daughter who incidentally is a strong supporter of the NHS was so worried as N was deteriorating before their eyes, she complained to the senior nurse on duty, who said she would speak to the team about to take over. Nothing happened, by this time N was becoming very poorly. My God Daughter, was so angry at the lack of concern she asked to speak to the person in charge of N treatment, things moved on a pace and the hospital manager came within a very short time. He then took over and N was given the care and the necessary treatment which included further surgery. Happily she is back home and making a steady recovery. My God Daughter has written to the hospital manager detailing all of the events, this only happened recently, so things are still not resolved.

If you feel you have a genuine complaint do not worry you have every right to voice your concern.

Take care Dizzi.

AnninGlos Report 20 Oct 2013 12:40

And also I note she remarked that twice a night disturbs other patients. I assume that you would need the loo more at night as well as in the day because of whatever they are doing to get rid of the fluid on your legs etc. Make sure you note that remark down it seems very unprofessional to me. And don't be scared, or if you are, don't let her see that you are. Be polite, as I am sure you always are, but firm with your requests. <3

John, undoubtedly H & S - but as has been said, she should have got another nurse, not refused to help.
