I am thinking of updating to a Kindle Fire HD.....it looks like they are selling very fast so will have to wait for abit me thinks :-)

I'm reading this with interest while window-shopping. I have a collection of vouchers of about £120 (which will have to be used at Argos or Amazon) and thought I might get an e-book (don't want a kindle as it can't be used at the library). On researching I thought I might get a proper tablet instead as it would be more generally useful (haven't a smartphone, very deaf).

No desire to have a Kindle I am quite happy turning pages. Also have the worry that should I invest in a Kindle it will end up in the cupboard with the George Foreman Grill, the Sandwich toaster, the Senso coffee maker and electric egg poacher

I poo poo'ed the the idea of having a Kindle for a long time ,as I love the real thing.
But OH bought me one last Christmas and I love it.I still have my 'normal' books too which I will continue to buy.But the best thing with a Kindle is it is lightweight,I can read it in bed at night without disturbing OH.I don't need to pack a ton of books to take on holiday.Just down load as many as I want .The biggest thing for me is holding a book to read in bed put a lot of pressure on my thumbs (holding the book open).With the Kindle is it so much easier and not painful .Fits in my handbag so perfect for taking anywhere :-D :-D.I wouldn't be without one now.

i had my loft converted to store them in with my family history stuff which has also taken over the back bedroom

I have a kindle and couldn´t live with out it the way I read, I tried not to have one because I love books, even the "clunk" books that you can´t read in bed in case you fall asleep ! Even with a kindle I keep trying to turn pages. I also have the problem that I daren´t take my kindle in the bath, like I would a book.
Over the last 2yrs I have flown back and forward to the UK my first flights I took a book no contest when I took the kindle.
I also find that I don´t have so many aches in my hands for holding the kindle that I was having with books.
I now have a bigger sauce of books that I didn´t have before and much easier to get.

I hate the fact that books might be defunct, because there is nothing better than a brand new book and turning those pages, but for me please never take my kindle away from me.

I can see the point of Kindles and other E readers, but they aren't for me. Books a great passion of mine - always have been. Well, I was a librarian! Like others, I love the feel, look and smell of books, and one of my pleasures is spending an hour or two in a good bookshop, especially if someone has given me a book token!
My OH fancied a Sony reader a couple of years ago, so I got him one for Christmas, but he's never used it. We are daft enough to take about 4 books apiece in our hand luggage whenever we go away!

I also like a few on here do not have or want a kindle.I love holding a real book and not have to be bothered with charging it(which costs money).

When i go on holiday, i never take any books as we always have plenty to see and do. never have time to read and i would find it rather selfish if one of us started reading leaving the other half sitting in silence. Sorry not for me.

I have all my books from school and my childhood and wouldn't part with any of them. Like Joy, I made notes as I was reading.

Also my eyes would ache as if i am on the comp for too long, I do get a headache from staring at the screen so I'm sure the kindle would do the same.

The only device I have is my very ordinary mobile and thats for emergencies only.

Sorry if i sound boring but kindle is not for me.

If you're happy with mp3 then youi'll be happy with a kindle, nook or whatever.

An eBook reader sure takes the boredom out of flying and all the hanging around or even the time going at 000kph with the frequent Eurostar breakdowns or stuck on a ferry. Great for visiting inlaws. No problem with pulp fiction either.

But at home ?

With a real book the typeface, paper and binding are all part of the art just the same as the cover art and sleeve notes are an integral part of the major vinyl albums from the 70s/80s.

My guess is that eBooks will gradually kill off pulp fiction (*) but real print will remain - at a price. Now is the time to get collectable stuff eg early editions of John Fowles.

(*) the technology in the labs is for a reader as thin as and as flexible as paper which will made the existing tablet style gadgets look very retro just like 70s over the ear cans.

It does not sound boring at all Florence we are all different and have different views....

I love my kindle.

Our local library isn't very good, the nearest bookshop is miles away.

I have three bookshelves stuffed with paper books, no space for any more!

The only paper books I can see (in the study) are 'phone books, some travel info & maps & a couple about genealogy.

I buy one magazine every month....... paper........ I wouldn't like that on kindle.

Well I have gone and done it I have pre ordered my Kindle Fire HD which comes out on the 24th!!!! yaaaaaaaay :-D :-D

I swore blind that I'd never have a Kindle, nothing could beat the feel and smell of a real book. Yes, I now have a kindle (in fact I have two).

Florence, the screen is not like a computer screen and I actually find it easier on the eyes when reading in bed (plus it doesn't disturb Mr Celeste as I don't need the lamp on (which costs money)). The minimal cost of charging it is far outweighed by the number of FREE books (not counting those that cost 20p to £1).

The first time I learnt about the Kindle was when Ann in Glos mentioned on a thread (a good while back now) that she owned one.
I was interested and went on-line to read all about Kindles.......then told my family about them. At the time it was news to them, and they said "noo we love books"!
Now they've all got one lol and I haven't :-( thinking about Kindle Light? or perhaps ask santa for a tablet? have recently had a 'play' with sister in law's. Which would you recommend please.

Depends what you want to do with it Mau, if just reading then the Kindle paperwhite is good (but I have a Kindle Touch going spare!)

If you want to use it as a tablet then the Fire HD.
