My OH is my rock, he's kept me afloat through what we thought was my terminal cancer, he sorts out family problems with fairness, he's funny, charismatic, my best friend, and it was love at first sight, 37 years ago! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I couldn't read the article, because my screen froze!

Like Geordie, my OH is my rock. We both knew within 5 minutes of meeting that we had something "special". We married seven months after we met, nearly 28 years ago.

We thought the same thing....... that we had found our "missing" part.

I have no idea what makes it work..... it just does.

My parents' marriage was NOT a good example.

53 years and still happy. But you don't spend all that time together without a hiccup or two. The main thing is how you deal with it. If you love each other, respect each other and are best friends you will come through the blips. You don't have rainbows without showers. And, what others have said, trust, tolerance, sense of humour, an ability to talk, honesty. My O H is my rock too, he supports me and is always there for me. I was under 16 and he was almost 18 when we met and we married 4 years later. Love him to bits and would be lost without him. <3

Ha ha Jonesey - so right. He can watch rugby/cricket 24/7 as far as I'm concerned, but in a different room with the door closed :-D

Cleo Laine and John Dankworth always had separate hotel suites and lived in a long narrow house.

Now I look back in hindsight, there is a lot of pressure to get married. On the estate where I lived in my teens in Walsall, if men were not married by 21 and women by 18, you were on the shelf or gay.

I was in retail management in my 20's, working silly hours and having casual girlfriends a plenty. But no great chemistry that told me it would be a good idea to devote 53 years or more to a relationship with them.

I know my son (aged 28 now) feels the same and he is worried he will never get a wife.

My click click came at age of 30 and, depite a lot of worries and problems, marriage has definitely been the best thing that has happened. I just hope my son finds the right one - he is looking for a goth, ideally under 30 and Welsh, who likes heavy metal :-D :-D And that is not a description of his dear mother, I can assure you. :-D

Marriage is like a plant, care for it and it will grow healthy.

If there is a problem, large or small - talk it out. Say 'I love you' often. Not forgetting laughter!!!

32 years for us now.Good times ,bad times but for whatever reason we seem to muck along together .Now will be the telling time......He has just retired :-S.It's only been a few weeks so early days.I'm sure there will be a few tough times ahead when we get on each others nerves,and he will be under my feet .A few 'bite my tongue' times will be on the cards .As I have pointed out to him he can disappear out to the Summerhouse(which has heating and light),his Study or the Greenhouse.I can then have the house all to myself lol :-D :-D

Jane, when we first retired we made a point of doing our own thing sometimes but always setting aside one day a week to go out somewhere together, we still try and do that and it works. :-)
