Thanks for that Malcolm. :-)

Mau you made me laugh, so let me see if I've
got this right, I have to pinch my lip when I get
cramp in my legs...suppose it could work if I
pinch my lip hard enough I would forget about the
pain in the legs cause my lip would be sore. :-D

I have prescribed quinine, but still get occasional bad bouts - recently remembered a doctor's advice from some time back to eat some fruit just before going to bed - last three nights cramp free!

Hello Jean,

Thank you for that and am finding all information given
by everyone is very helpful, others reading the thread
may also have cramps so it could help them.
I also drink a lot of sugar free diluting juices and feel that

I used to have terrible night cramps, so bad I was up most of the night, my doctor gave me Diazapam 2mg and also said a couple of paracetamols during the day,I have tabs for blood pressure, no problems with the other tabs, but I do drink a lot of water and sugar free juices, I also sometimes use moisturiser rubbed well in before I get in bed, and also an excersise which is both hands on the wall feet stretched back and bend elbows at the start it feels quite painful but after a few press ups the muscles start to relax , and warmth on the calves help greatly, well it works for me and now I sleep all night, hope all the ideas we all have put up helps, cant think of anything worse than cramp pain...

love Jean x

Hi Emma,

Kandj just beat me to it!! I was going to recommend tonic water too. :-D

Hope you find something that sorts it out soon - it's sooooo painful. :-(

Take care. :-)

Kandj
Used to drink the tonic water but still got cramps but that was ages ago.
Did drink it through the day so maybe last thing at night might be better,
will give it a go.

Emma
Hubby and I both have occasional night cramps and so you have our sympathy. My neighbour takes Quinine tablets but as hubby is on Warfarin the pharmacist says this is not suitable for him. I buy Shweppes Tonic Water and drink a glass of this before bed (when I can remember) as this contains Quinine.

I have also read that not drinking enough water during the day could be a cause of this excruciating painful condition.

Neither of us have had this for a while but I am touching wood as I am typing this. It is not pleasant at all, so good luck. I hope you can find something that will help you.

I've read that sleeping with a wine cork - cork, not plastic - in the bed will prevent cramp. It didn't recommend drinking all the wine first though.

Thanks for that Andysmum, I keep my bedding loose, am quite
a restless sleeper and keep waking up when I turn in bed, this is
when I get tangled up and the cramps start.

They say I might as well face the truth,
That I am just too long in the tooth,
I've started to deteriorate,
And now I'm past my own sell-by date.

Oh I am no spring chicken it's true,
I have to pop my teeth in to chew,
And my knees are starting to know,
I've just got too many miles on the clock.

So I'm a wrinkly, crinkly, set in my ways
It's true that my body has seen better days,
But give me half a chance and I can still misbehave

I am lucky as I do not usually suffer from cramp. The following article is quite interesting, and the quote from it might help.

http://www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk/encyclopaedia/l/article/legcramps,unknowncause/

Preventing leg cramps

If you often get leg cramps, regularly stretching the muscles in your lower legs may help prevent the cramps or reduce their frequency.

You might find it useful to stretch your calves before you go to bed each night.

The following night-time advice may also help:

If you lie on your back, make sure that your toes point upwards – placing a pillow on its side at the end of your bed, with the soles of your feet propped up against it may help keep your feet in the right position.
If you lie on your front, hang your feet over the end of the bed – this will keep your feet in a relaxed position and help stop the muscles in your calves from contracting and tensing.
Keep your sheets and blankets loose.
