Bearing in mind that novice drivers tend to bump into things, go for something that is cheap to insure, and easy to find parts for.....with good already visibility!

As you'll be the main driver, your choice should prevail! ;-)

EDIT - our three who bought and where the principal named driver each chose something where they could 'see the end' ie hatch backs and something with a small bonnet

Fiesta
Micra
Fiat Uno - rubbish car and virtually no brakes.

Our second car is my wifes name and we have added the kids as named drivers. For my 18 year old son the premium went up by £60pm. This was MUCH cheaper than him trying to insure anything in his own name, quotes over £2000 pa. Ouch.

Good for you Andrew!
You deserve it.
I remember my friends had an old Triumph Spitfire in the early 80's.
As students, they travelled all over Europe in it... full camping gear and all!

This is my dilemma at the mo.....
As a 2 car family, my eldest dau will be moving out soon and taking her car with her.
Youngest is due to sit her test soon
We will need a 2nd car and youngest would never get insured for ours .
She loves all things retro..........and really wants a Vespa Scooter... that's not happening!

Do we get a smallish car of MY choice ( I will be the main driver) or do we please our youngest and get the car of HER dreams... ... a Nissan Figaro???

Would I look silly in one of those?

I always dreamed of having a Jensen Interceptor.

Andrew Report 23 Aug 2013 12:15

An MGB would have been my first choice, but a good one would be twice the cost of the Triumph and wouldn't fit the garage. Have joined one of the car clubs and local meets twice a month. Didn't want another modern car like MX5 or Z4. Was a good excuse to clear all the junk that we have been keeping 'just in case its useful'. Keep cars worth thousands on the drive, rubbish worth nothing under cover locked away.

Daughter had one back in the 80s.

I always fancied an MGB until one day I sat in one and couldn't reach the pedal, can't remember if it was length (I am five two and a bit or if they were high off the floor so uncomfortable for smallish feet.

Two cramped for the two of us now so we settle for sporty 2 door bigger but not ne cars such as BMWs and Merc, which I don't drive.

Not so jealous now

Would have gone for a MGB before the Spitfire

Back in the 1970's my boss would allow me to use his MGB for work journeys

There is a very active Triumph Car Club Andrew, I am sure they will have a branch local to you for meetings etc.

I bet it won't be long before you wife will be after a ride in it with you. M

You going to get under it yourself?

Maryanna

Maryanna Report 23 Aug 2013 11:49

Oh, I am sooooo jealous.

A Spitfire just HAS to be in red. Like a (proper) Mini. M

Andrew

Andrew Report 23 Aug 2013 11:47

Its a Triumph Spitfire, bright red. Previous owner said you have to watch other drivers because they start looking at the car instead of where their going. None of the driver aids that you get with modern cars of course. You use spanners and screwdrivers rather than a computer to service/repair it.

Good on you Andrew.

My dad promised he would buy me an MG BGT for my 21st. He didn't.

He did, however, buy himself one when he was about 70, he never even took me in the thing.

By the time he died a couple of years ago at 83, the poor old car was past it so I couldn't even take it on as it would have cost too much.

We sold it to an enthusiast who will do it up and love it.

Dad was always a great motor car enthusiast, rallying when younger, he never had less than three cars and there were eight to rehome when he died.

He was the member of many car clubs, chairman of several, well known make ones, and spent many happy weekends at Concours d'elegance and local and national and international runs and meets. His love of cars kept him going to the end.

I too, have always loved motor cars, so love and enjoy your car Andrew, they will all come round in the end !! M

EWnjoy it and stay safe. Bet your OH will enjoy a ride in it. You didn't say which make it is.

LadyScozz Report 23 Aug 2013 11:28

No, you're NOT mad! :-D

I think many people would LOVE to have a car like that, but don't do it because of
"What will people SAY!"

Enjoy your drives :-D

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 23 Aug 2013 11:12

LOL - As long as you can afford to run it, why not? :-D

There could be owners groups who organise 'runs' which would give a reason to get out, and expand your social circle. You could also be asked to turn up and display at various Fetes etc. Even the SWMBO (what does that stand for?) might enjoy some of the events!!!

Although my OH keeps going on about old Land Rovers, it will never happen. Even if it did, our offspring would probably tut and shake their heads while secretly laughing their socks off :-D
