Bearing in mind that novice drivers tend to bump into things, go for something that is cheap to insure, and easy to find parts for.....with good already visibility!

As you'll be the main driver, your choice should prevail! ;-)

EDIT - our three who bought and where the principal named driver each chose something where they could 'see the end' ie hatch backs and something with a small bonnet

Fiesta
Micra
Fiat Uno - rubbish car and virtually no brakes.

Enjoy your Spitfire Andrew,Not a bad little motor, and as you say you can fix it with spanners not Computors.Personally of the Triumph Brand I would prefer Either a TR6 or a Stag. take care and enjoy.**M**.

Janet Report 23 Aug 2013 13:17

Yes I was disappointed when it turned out to be a Triumph Spitfire, and a red one to boot. I remember the Spitfire not being very good on cornering so drive carefully.

I much preferred the MGB and remember us buying an MGB GT as it was big enough to fit a carry cot......well that was what I was told at the time.

He who lives in another house has two Smart cars. One because he is Yorkshire and tight and another Smart sport's car because that is what 'boys' of a certain age like to drive around in.

Enjoy.-jl

A friend some two years after widowed - spoke to OH about a similar car - OH encouraged him. Best thing he ever did - he met a new circle of people who only knew him as a single. They have monthly dinners, go for 'breakfast runs'. Go for weekends away - rallies - several go over each year to France and the Monte Carlo race.

Andrew enjoy your car, Get HWMBO a new set of sunglasses and a head scarf and head on down to the coast , if you have one in your neck of the woods.

Tell HWMBO that its a status cymbal for her too . She can do a Kay Kendle impersonation and imagine you are Rex Harrison too if that what rocks her boat :-D :-D :-D

MY OH would love to be able to do the same but unfortunately has had to give up driving

SO enjoy whilst you can :-D

There is a rock blues singer called Chris Rea.
He used to own a Lotus 7 which he drove all over Europe before giving the car away to charity ( not mine sad to say )
He created a musical memory of the car called "Auberge".
Get a copy of this, plug it into your phones and go for a long drive.
Fast, eg Heads of the Valleys, North Yorks and so on.
You are 100% sane don't worry.

Ha ha Andrew with your heading I was going to say asking for opinions if you are mad then you must be. :-D
Reading your post I now guess you maybe. :-D and I am jealous.
Go for it, why shouldn´t you have something you can enjoy and as you said it doesn´t need work on it just get in and drive. The wife will stop shaking her head and start to enjoy days out. The children well they all come round in the end.
As someone else said there are clubs about for vintage cars so you have now got yourself a new hobby

Happy driving enjoy it :-D

PS we used to have a 25yr old Nova and all the youngsters OH worked with loved it. Sadly for them when we traded it in this year none could meet the trade in price.

Andrew,
I am likely older than you, but in my mind I'm still around 27, but unfortunately the body disagrees... enjoy your new found youth.....at least it will keep you off the street corners......LOL

BTW MY old toy (not a car)was built in '63 so your '78 toy is a mere whippersnapper!!
I've just sold mine to a young chap (two months younger than me)...........LOL and they get along just fine

Andrew
I hope you have great times out and about with your car.
Sensible...........maybe not, but what the heck, just enjoy it.

Rather reminds me of the time a few years back when my husband arrived home with a car. He'd been working away during the week and with too much time on his hands had just 'happened upon' an M.R 2..old style on a garage forecourt.. Totally impractical as it was only a 2 seater and you couldn't even get much shopping in the boot, but he thought it was great and travelled to MR 2 meets to see other owners and their cars.

Unfortunately someone else fancied the car and it was stolen one night, never to be seen again, but it was good while it lasted.

As you can see, Andy, everyone here is egging you on to enjoy your new toy.
How about posting a picture of it?
Good for you. I agree, too; enjoy. Have GREAT fun!

However, while enjoying yourself, please remember "'Er indoors."
It's good that you have the kids interested and joining you in this venture.

Ah, I do hope you have great patience should you encounter a similar situation with 'Seniors" when out and about in your wheels ...

Have now got my new purchase home after driving from South Wales to Staffordshire. Its great fun. Makes a heck of a racket when pushed hard through the gears! Neighbours can't believe it. Its not perfect by any means, but hopefully no major work to be done. Most of the problems are caused by its relative lack of use and I'll sort those over the winter. Going in for a service and MOT soon.

Shame the weather is changing a bit now and the days getting shorter but you can use the autumn winter to get the car sorted out and be all ready for the first bright days next year. Working on it will keep you busy and less bored too.

Have fun
