Watched with interest, and will watch again next week. Not sure though that it should be shown as early as 8pm.
Twas a little difficult explaining to my grandsons (agedeight and nine) what was going on. This was after explaining that No, it was NOT a horror movie.

Would be excellant viewing for children at sSecondary School though.

As well as lip reading, the millworkers also "spoke" sign language (of their own devising).

I saw this advertised about a week ago, and watched it last night. I found it very good, although I was saying to myself 'oh look its him out of Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'its her out of Corrie'.

I think the penny may have also dropped regarding the expression kak handed. One lad was talking about the boy who was injured, saying his right hand was the one for food, and the left hand was for wiping his btm. He then said the word kak. Am I right in thinking this is the origin of left handed people being described as kak handed?

By the way, the penny hit me on the foot!

:-D :-D :-D

At times the picture was so dark, presumably giving the impression that a candle didn't give out much light, that I thought I was listening to a Radio Four play. -jl

jax Report 4 Aug 2013 14:54

I ended up watching it on my laptop as it wouldn't show on the sky catch up...its there now though :-(

It was difficult to watch at times as it was so dark, thought it was me

Was not disappointed with last night's programme.
The harshness of the time is acted out well and the
sadness of the little girl's death was very moving,
although I knew she would die on the way.

The HD version is a lot better to view, it does not suffer from the "dark" effect to anything like the same degree.

Some of my ancestors were mill engineers and I still have some of their diaries and plans. Most cotton mills even in 1830 would have been far larger than the mill suggested in the program which seems to be about workshop size.

I don't know if this will come up in a future episode but one of the biggest dangers in the mills was fire.

'Emma' Report 5 Aug 2013 11:37

Rollo if I remember right, I think that was mentioned
last night that if the girl didn't pick up the pieces of
cotton off the floor one spark could set it on fire.

Very interesting info about your ancestors re diaries and plans,
such a treasure to have.
