Have never had a fox, squirrel, rabbit (except for our pets) or a mole in my garden. Hope it stays that way :-D

Those buzzing deterrents do work but the batteries don't last and the rain damages them.
This year I have had the sprinkler on so much the cats have avoided the garden - they don't like wet grass. I also put all their poo in the garden next door from where they come from.

Got some cheap powder from the £ shop which seems to work even on the wet soil.

Don't know where all the foxes and grey squirrels have gone this year. We have some secret removers round here which nobody would snitch on.

It is not illegal to use electronic cat deterrents, they sell them everywhere, and if you get a good one they do work.
They also scare off foxes and moles.

Lindi I would stick with the garlic :-D

Our problem is not cats but rabbits :-(

Lyndi

Lyndi Report 16 Jul 2013 23:02

Mau, I am probably using the stuff at the right time then, it's not often we have a spell without rain :-)

Lyndi

Lyndi Report 16 Jul 2013 23:01

They sell a product based on the smell of big cat poo lol, not sure that would be an improvement on the garlic :-D

Lyndi

Lyndi Report 16 Jul 2013 22:59

I can appear to be deranged when cleaning up yet more cat poo Rollo ;-)
I have looked at the plastic type spikes you can get, and I see you have to display a warning sign to say they are being used :-D
Again that would only solve the problem in the back - the bigger problem is at the front :-(

I wouldn't mind so much if I actually liked cats, but.......

Mauatthecoast Report 16 Jul 2013 22:59

Most stuff you buy washes away in the rain..........only logical answer buy your very own tiger.........tiger poo is supposed to be THE deterrent,or so i'm told :-S

Yes Lyndi, when I first got the gel I didn't realise you don't have to put much down - and same as you, I had to close all the windows it was such a pong!!. Don't worry, the smell fades over a few days, and you don't have to replenish much before the cats will soon learn to avoid your garden. ;-)

Lyndi Report 16 Jul 2013 22:54

Cat's don't seem to bury their poo any more Nolls - they poop and run these days lol

It is a criminal offense to shoot cats, dogs, most wild life with an air rifle.
Anybody seriously suggesting that as a way of keeping OP cats out of gardens cannot be serious or if they are then deranged.

Cats have territories which overlap but CatA and CatB will not use the same patch at the same time i.e. they time share. Even if you shot the cats others would simply take over the now vacant time shares so as well as risking prison and no US visa you'd be no further forward in evicting cats.

It is also illegal to deploy sound devices with a high frequency. This is not because cats don't like them ( they don't ) but they are also extremely distressing to babies, children and young people.

It is illegal to poison them and again risk of prison sentence ( the RSPCA take a very dim view and have powers of arrest which they use ).

It is illegal to put glass and other sharpies on top of walls. This is because although cats don't like it the human rights of burglars are infringed and perhaps more importantly the boys in blue don't like this sort of thing when in hot pursuit.

So what to do ?

Cats do not like spicy smells or garlic and you can get stuff based on this designed to deter cats. It works for a while or until it rains. Legal. Fairly expensive. Only works with some cats.

Put netting over growing veggies and freshly dug soil. Very effective and cheap, works when it is raining.

And of course the ultimate answer, get a cat, large is better.
He/she will not allow frolicking from the others and will go off to do his/her business at OP garden.

Many cats are very good at catching the gardener's worst enemy, moles, so think about the balance.

That's oranges and lemons on my shopping list then - think I will have to get a large bottle of Pimms so I can use the oranges :-D

Have never ever found a solution to this problem :-(......we've tried many things on the market ( and from kitchen ie garlic.chilli, pepper etc.) :-(..... didn't find Scaredy Cat plant any good I'm afraid.....OH has used a water pistol on cats but new one on the block comes into our garden at night :-|

Nolls from Harrogate

Nolls from Harrogate Report 16 Jul 2013 22:50

Second thoughts...Are you sure it's cat's poo?? Could it be a fox? we found poo in our garden last year and it turned out to be foxes remember a cat doesn't usually leave poo around it usually covers it with earth...just a thought. :-)

Lyndi

Lyndi Report 16 Jul 2013 22:50

I will look for that plant Karen, thank you.
I think the combination of the garlic and the heat could have made it worse today lol - and maybe I just put too much down ;-) I got some in a pack that looks like seeds, and some in a bottle - gel granules - comes out in big green blobs (yuk!)

Karen in the desert

Karen in the desert Report 16 Jul 2013 22:50

P.S. I have also tried the chopped lemon and orange peel as mentioned above. Just sprinkle it around, at least it's not as nasty smelling as the garlic stuff....the main thing is to remove previous traces of any poo or they'll be attracted back to the same area.

George

George Report 16 Jul 2013 22:46

If you know where the cat or cats live, shovel up to poo and shove it through their owners letter box :-D :-D :-D

George :-)
