Bognor Butlins has a building that is supposed to resemble a tent I think, as is the grandstand at Goodwood racecourse.The sows teats of the downs.

Okay Southampton civic centre may not be the prettiest place but it's by no means the worse !! It was much nicer with the rose gardens in front of it for sure.
If you want ugly in Soton then what about that block of 60's flats that was in front of the railway station, I think they won an award years ago for being ugly....are they still there ??? I haven't seen the Titanic museum so can't comment on it sorry.
The Parliament buildings in Edinburgh now they are UGLY !! =0)

Not particularly ugly, just bland 1960's, is the Melbourne flats block in Chelmsford.
Just about the only building over four stories tall for miles around and it sticks out like a sore thumb from all directions.

There's been many ugly buildigs put up in central London over the past 30 years, but the very worst still has to be the Lloyds Building by Leadenhall Street. Where someone had the pretentious idea of leaving all the steel casings for the pipes and cables on the outside. Horrible.

I also agree with John that the Gherkin is one of the ugliest buildings in the City. Especially as it was built on the site of the beautiful Baltic Exchange building.

The oldest church in Birmingham St Martin is in the Bullring (it´s still there).
Aston Juxta Birmingham got it´s alternative name because Aston wasn´t part of Birmingham when it was built, but was actually a much more important place & SS Peter & Paul is older than St Martin.

Wolverhampton Mander Centre. They had to lose a lovely old arcade off Queens Square and some interesting and historic folds.

Aston Juxta is just another name for St Peter & St Paul Aston, so not sure which St Peter you mean. St Peter Dale End was demolished before my time.
However, this debate is taking over Chris´s thread, which isn´t the idea.

Nobody mentioned the Gerkin in London. Probably a bit like Marmite. I think I like it now, though I didn't at first.

There are two lovely churches in Brum - St Peters and Aston Juxta - that seem to have been surrounded and dwarfed by modern functional buildings. Many churches in our cities are like that - St Pauls in London is quite boxed in.

Wisechild Loved Brum in 50's. It seemd so tall and solid and powerful as a city. And one of my first jobs was a Saturday boy in Tesco at foot of old Rotunda. Selling exotics like lemons off a stall. :-D :-D

For me, one of the ugliest developments in recent years has to be the new Bull Ring Centre in Birmingham, probably because I have memories of it as it was in the 50s.
I aso hate the Guggengheim Museum in Bilbao.
The town I live in now is crammed with beautiful old buildings including several 17th & 18th century "palaces".Many of them have had their ground floors converted into small retail outlets. Whose bright idea was it to let a double unit in one of them to Burger King?

And if you think that Derby Hospital is among the wonders of the world, I suggest you spend as much time there as I do, instead of me.
I don't suppose Google Earth showed the one toilet to be shared by seriously ill patients in A & E, and the prisoners. That was so wonderfully architecturaly designed. Only by a moron.

Julia The thread is about what is the ugliest building in our county. You threatened to rr me for my two posts, one of which was about Maerdy Comp in my county, one of which was a "very witty" remark about the resident of a not very notable building with beautiful gardens who is the self-appointed world architectural guru.

I have looked at Derby Hospital on google earth and it is beautiful :-D

I think the old town hall in Sheffield can beat all of the counties!

It was demolished some years ago - thankfully!

Don't know about the County but the Civic Hall within the walls in Conwy is an abolute eyesore, at least the rear of it is.

The original building was gutted by fire in about 1966 and only the frontage was saved/retained. It was rebuilt in concrete and sticks out like a sore thumb especially as the frontage is beautiful. It backs onto the Quay and visually smacks you in the face as you approach the town from the bridge over the River Conwy.

No idea what Conwy Council were thinking of when they passed the plans especially as Conwy is a World Heritage Sight :-0

John, yet again, you are missing the point, of what I actually posted. I said this thread was about the buildings, not the people that lived in them, when you twice belittle Prince Charles, who, if it has not caught up with you yet, is a serving Prince of your country. The gardens at Highgrove are second to none.
In the same vein, I am not interested on your remarks about Maerdy Comp., and cannot see what there was in my comments to make you think I was.
As you have never been a patient, (to the best of my knowledge) in the hospital in Derby, which incidentaly, I spend half my life, thus making me more of an authority to speak about it, than it does you, I wonder why you speak about it's 'wonderful design', and what in my comments would make you want to RR what I said about it, and even threaten to do so. Unless you designed it yourself, I do not feel you are any sort of expert on this matter.
As for Corby, as I have never been there in my live, I do not know why you had to bring this place into the equation.

Julia, Don't expect you to agree with me about Highgrove and Maerdy Comp. I thought your post about the wonderfully designed hospital in Derby was wrong, but have not felt tempted (yet) to press the refer button. :-D

Sometimes you won't agree with a poster, sometimes you won't share their humour, but let's agree to differ. Even over the Tricorn Building. Or most of Corby town centre :-( :-( :-(

Indeed John, Highgrove is NOT in my county you're quite right :-D

Not been here long enough to notice anything especially atrocious, but the local council offices built in the 70s, concrete block basically,would be hard to love.

Hello Wend, Strange thing. I must have woke up this morning, and lost my sense of humour over night, because I did not appreciate what John said. However, I do agree with you and Rose. Highrove is absolutely beatutiful.
