The oldest family names are to be found in the Old Testament Chronicles 1.1.

The tribe of Gomer (Gomes Gom Al Ghanem et al are fond of pointing out that theirs is one of the oldest family names in the Old Testament. My OH belongs to this tree and she just larfs.

This may of course be a possible reason why she cannot get her tree to print out ;-)

As very basic Parish Records started to be kept from 1558, and some were backdated to 1538, it is possible to find ordinary rellies that far back, though not always possible to be absolutely sure. People with status kept their own records anyway, so if you are linked to them, you are very lucky.

Myself, I have got back to a birth in 1699. There are the names further back in those records, but I can't identify them conclusively.

However one of my lines picked up a tree done in 1898 which links back to King Edward I and beyond. I haven't seen all the records back to the link, but someone must have. Besides, there must be loads of us descended from royalty, just look on here.

Oh, and I have Rollo Ragnvaldsson too.
