I believe that everybody has a right to believe in what they wish to, my grandparents were devout Jehovas Witnesses ...but nobody has the right to try and put their belief on others (Muslims come to mind) .
Everybodies lifes are different and most people are happy having something to belief in..that´s good <
I like Eldrick would defend my family and friends against any harm I thought a belief would bring them.

Uzzi who believes in dragons :-D

Well said Joy ,in a few words ,you have hit a thorny nail ,right on the head.
Here we go again ,Religion has caused about every war since the dawn of creation from the wars in the pre bible era ,through to the one in Afghanistan ,brother fighting against brother .
Man always argues that they are right ,and another is wrong ,and there is never going to be an agreement to these issues .
The best way out of this coming war of words , is to call it quits and put this subject to bed .
Please peoples, make love ,not war .Fred. :-D

To get back on track...

I'm not an atheist because I see it as actively not believing in religion as being a christian is actively believing in that religion. On those forms that you fill out where they ask you to put your religion I tend to tick agnostic because irrelevance isn't usually given as an option. That to me is what religion is. If it ceased to exist tomorrow I wouldn't even notice.

I do find religion, as a subject, quite interesting. I have a copy of the bible on my bookshelf, right next to a copy of Dawkins 'The god delusion', I've dipped into both, although I've not actually got around to reading either in any detail just yet. I also have a copy of the Quaran and books about witchcraft/wicca/paganism. However, as a belief system it doesn't feature on my radar.

Yes, I say things like 'oh my god' and 'Jesus christ' but they're just words that don't have any particular meaning, to me, although I suspect some would see them as blasphemy.

Anyway that's my two cents worth...for now ;-)

I just hope that the discourse on this thread, does not result in Eldrick disappearing from this board again.
We need more like him. People who are happy to debate, and who by doing so, bring abit of life to this sometime mundane board.

I also 'know' things about Eldrick, ie he has debated with me on the supernatural/religion and vegetarianism without once insulting me personally or unfairly ridiculing my beliefs, whilst putting forward his own reasoned argument.

I am happy to question what I believe, I am happy to have it questioned by others (even though I am right of course ;-) ) and I am happy to question what I perceive to be 'wrong', in religion or any other sphere.

I'd like to add IMHO but it wouldn't be accurate lol, gee but it's hard to be humble ;-)

If I remember correctly, this subject was discussed some years ago, with the same result, perhaps its time to knock it on the head and let the thread die.**M**.

TeresaW Report 8 Mar 2012 14:18

His business? Then why mention it Carol?

Anyway, I feel like I've been suckered into a thread that has an underlying motive, so I'll move on.

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 8 Mar 2012 14:17

I shall tactfully withdraw as the discourse has been well and truly diverted and the canons of civility breached.

Thank you for the kind words though!

Edit - final word - I have NEVER EVER ridiculed an individual. I have responded to attacks but NEVER once ever singled out an individual and ridiculed them. Never. I have, frequently, however, ridiculed, mocked and made fun of beliefs. There is a whole difference, a massive difference and anyone who can't grasp that difference is now better informed.

I do wish we could quote or even multiquote :)

However ...

"We all live our lives according to these beliefs, but should we try to force others to do the same?"
- No.

"It is everyone’s right to have freedom of speech, but is it right to ridicule those who do not have your belief’s?"
- No.

"If you do not share someone’s religion, does it give you the right to want to change that religion or condemn it?"
- No.

All my answers are IMHO (in my humble opinion).

I answered Eldrick when he mentioned that I thought I knew him over a few posts on here ... I did NOT say I knew him, though when he was a member the first time we chatted a lot & that was what I knew him as, not Eldrick.

I was making a point to him ... but apologise if HE took it as a threat ... was not meant as one, as I said his business.

Sorry Rose, but I was incensed at such rudeness and betrayal with nasty undertones. I seldom bother reporting.

There should be rules on forums, particularly this one. Do not discuss religion, politics or the McCanns, and above all do NOT disagree with the OP regardless of your own views.

Eldrick Report 8 Mar 2012 14:01

Oh here we go again. I'm not going to get into a discussion about private lives on here - I've been down that road in the past.

I did, however, learn a useful lesson. Trust absolutely no one off this site and stay totally detached from any semblance of friendship, as it WILL come back and bite you on the bum.

I would never have the bad manners to discuss anything said in any sort of private conversation, no matter how innocuous. But, as I say, lesson learnt and learnt well. Tell away, I dont care. Nor do I care about implying that there is something sinister that you know about. There isn't.
