Now calm down Muffy or I'll be sending yer some of be Bendro tablets for your blood pressure. I totally agree with you. As descent law abiding people we all feel the same. But, there are those that think they are entitled to everything on offer, and there are those that, because the system does not point out to them just what they are entitled to, do not get their full benefits.
Now take this for a case. Young couple across the road from me. He has never worked. Now they are expecting their fourth child. He can manage to do that, and it is all I have seen him do since he moved onto the street. Children are kept beutifully dressed and clean. They have take-away meals delivered Saturday nights. It is beyond me. I can't make our pensions stretch that far.
In otherwords, some people can make it pay on benefits whilst others struggle.

I was always brought up to believe that benefits were the safety net that you paid into to use IF you needed them....and a couple of times over the years (through redundancies) we've had to avail ourselves of them for a couple of months..it was unpleasant and I hated every minute.

I do not begrudge one penny piece of it to genuine people who have had changes in circumstances and need it to live on...in fact, in genuine cases I think they should have more !!!

BUT what I can't get my head around is folk who use it as a way of life because they think it's beneath them to work so why should they...or take it just because they can when there is no NEED on their part to do so...that is NOT what the system was designed for and it HAS to stop...because it's taking money away from the genuine people who need it far more.

I'll stop now...cos me blood pressure is soaring lol

I think that somewhere along the line, we need someone from the Benefits Agency, to make a statement, to clarify the situation, because are we talking the official line here, or what we would do personally.
Now if twere me, I'd definitely get rid of the benefits, and would be ashamed to keep claiming them, whilst having all that kind of money. But that is only little old me.

No and neither would most people I think. Only those of the 'I worked for x number of years it is owed to me' brigade. :-(

It's a toughie isn't it...because the pensioners that retire abroad have paid into the pot for their pensions ..so i don't see a problem with that really.

Unless of course they have millions in the bank like this guy.....then I'd feel they were just being bleeding greedy lol x

Julia Report 9 Feb 2012 09:06

I know what you mean Muffy. But he probably feels that he is entitled so he will have them.
Re County Kerry not being in the UK. Well yes I do know that. But what about the pensioners that live abroad, but still claim their benefits, even heating allowence when living in Spain etc. It is because they can claim them, that they do. So in that sense, he is only doing the same.
By the way, I am not saying that I agree with any of it.

Julia I don't think there's any doubt that he's entitled to claim the benefits....some just aren't means tested and his isn't. ...it's all down to whether he SHOULD claim them under the circumstances x

**if he moved to Ireland he'd lose his benefits because County Kerry isn't in the UK x

Firstly, let me apologise to anyone that are fortunate or unfortunate, depending on how you feel, to live in Sneinton, Nottingham. The wealth of Creseus would not tempt me to reside there. So, if I came into that amount of money, you would not see me for dust.
But on a more serious note, if I had spent years on benefits, I would only be too glad to see the end of them.
Having read the piece in the Daily M***, I see they are on disability benefits. Are these not their legal entitlement despite how much money they are worth. I do not know, hence the question.
I do believe that on any benefit form, it does say something to the effect that if your circumstances change you have to notify the authority paying the benefit.
As news of this win, has been well publicised in the press, you would have thought that the paying authority would have at least suspended their benefits whilst enquiries are made. As I have previously said, it may be that they are still entitled to the benefits, and there is nothing anyone can do.

PS. I wouldn't half mind that house in Kerry, though, so can't understand why they would rather live in the one in Sneinton.

Kay???? Report 9 Feb 2012 08:57

after his handouts abt 5m plus his near 1m house in Ireland from his win in 2005,I should say they are still sitting on a nice lump to give them a very luxury life,,,,,,,,entiled he maybe but for me I just couldnt put an extra drain on the system,,,,,,yet savings have a limit when making benifit claims ,its grossly unfair.......he doesnt need the extra benifit cash to enhance his quality of life.
a case of I can so I will. which makes him look greedy and not in good light :-(

Don't forget they will be taxed on the interest as their children will be on the 1million share that the parents have given them.

So they will be paying in as much if not more than they are taking out on DLA.

Are they politicians by any chance?

By the way Mildred, if the winner leaves the UK as you suggested, I assume the massive win would go too. So, this country would lose out on the potential use of the money.

I'd prefer the winner to stay & help the economy by spending it here. What do you think?

Muffyxx

Muffyxx Report 9 Feb 2012 08:16

I would too Mildred...either give it back .or give it to a childrens charity.

I wouldn't dream of taking money off the tax payers of this country if I had substantial cash like that in the bank x

Mildred.
There are lots of non means tested benefits available, Child Benefit & State Pension being prime examples.
It´s all a matter of common decency really.

I'm surprised savings dont come into play when claiming benefits .:-0

Why dont they begger back to Ireland & let people who need the money claim it to help with the cost of making their lives liveable . :-| :-| :-|

I would be ashamed to claim benefits whilst sitting on a nest egg like that :-( its a matter of greed rather than need. And its taxpayers who help fund their greed. :-| :-| :-| :-|

wisechild Report 9 Feb 2012 07:51

Why on earth would you, apart from the modern day attitude of "I´m entitled"
Would have thought you could live very comfortably on the interest from 10 million, without ever touching the capital.
I know I could.

If you had won £10 million on the lottery....would you still claim £6000 a year in benefits even if you were entitled to ?

Hand on heart I honestly wouldn't x
