Well, said I, there are hundreds of them around but it's better if you dont go that way *pointing....and stick to this way *pointing again.

Thank you she said politely and tried to cross the road with cars coming from all directions, but what with the buggy and the huge suitcase, she was struggling. `So...let me help you, I said and she said thanks so much.

So when I took the suitcase....well it nearly knocked me over it was so heavy, and what with the dog on the other side, wondering what was going on, it was no easy thing, I can tell you.

Well when we got to the other side of the road, she turned to me and

...the tears were rolling down her face. 'I have just left my husband' she cried and my heart sank. A vision of Mary and the baby Jesus having nowhere to go, and it being Christmas and everything flashed before my eyes. I was on the point of telling her she could have a bed for the night when I remembered I had a lodger.

So I held her arm and told her I was sorry. And I watched as she walked off in the rain.

So I stood for a while, the rain pouring down, the dog bewildered, when

go on. go on!

...I saw she had entered a rather posh (for the area) hotel and my heart sank again as she looked so upset and dishevelled and what with the buggy and the huge suitcase, I felt the receptionist would refuse to take her in.

So, heaving a big sigh as at this stage I knew that I would have to take her home and find some space for her, so I dragged my wet dog through the Hotel door and went up to where the woman was standing at the reception area.....

I put my hand on her arm. 'Are you all right?' I said. She turned to me and smiled. Yes I am fine and thank you for your help, but they are very nice here and have found me a room'... I noticed she had a credit card.

Well, I'll be honest with you, I was relieved!

But.....I was left wondering how she would get on, and what she had put in the heavy suitcase and if she went back to her husband, and how things must have been awful for her to leave on such a wet, dismal night.
