Hi Sharron,
There's been a change of view in some care homes. Many wouldn't let their service users do anything for health & safety resons - but if someone has managed to keep themselves alive for 80 years - why should they suddenly be deemed incapable of everything?
Obviously there are some things they can't do - like felling a tree, but they can trim hedges, plant seeds, and, as you say, help prepare food.

Oddly enough, I'm working from home today, creating training materials for risk management ie to train carers to assess what they can allow their clients to do. If Mr X aged 85 is of sound mind and wants to go for a spot of sky diving - why shouldn't he?
3 things to assess -
1)is the firm established, with a good track record/insurance etc?
2)will he be going with an experienced partner (it would obviously have to be a tandem jump)
3) Does he understand he may have a heart attack/break a limb/lose his dentures?LOL

Now, back trying to create a giant picture of a morph-like creature !!!

Seeing the reference to care homes made me think about an idea I have had that I could maybe put into action with mucho dosh.

As you all know,I bully my poor disabled old dad into getting on with things. Now, I always feel that the elderly go into homes because they cannot cope with some things but not everything. I would have them running their own rest home, not passng a bean bag on Wednesdays.

They could prep the food, make the tea, do the washing and hoover. Of course there would be staff to assist them and they would only do what they were able and comfortable with. (That is something my old dad dreams of!) Just so they don't feel they have become obsolete.

I've always found the thought of having an immense amount of money rather scary but, never having been in that position...how would I know?

I worked until pregnant with my first child but haven't done any 'paid' work since. My OH had the sort of job where I could support him from home and that was my choice. I may not have been paid but, boy, did I work - and I wouldn't have changed it for the world. Money was often tight but the rewards of 'working' together far outweighed that problem.

I love the ideas some of you have come up with - and I do have leanings towards animal charities but would probably end up donating towards the charities devoted to medical conditions which have affected my family.....Heart, MS, Parkinson's, Autism etc.

What I would really, really, like to do is to set up a couple of youth centres in our town - somewhere for the teenagers to go and enjoy themselves whilst learning some life skills and getting career advice.

Here, my imagination goes wild....ultra modern, state of the art gym equipment, computer rooms, games rooms, showers, quiet rooms, discussion rooms, cafe.......and, most importantly, people to be there for them. I could go on. And on.

Oh, and I may get a new carpet for downstairs. :-D

Oh, Rose, I'm sort of in that situation now. Not that we are rich but OH took early retirement more than a year ago and we could afford for me to give up work but I'm digging my heels in.

Apart from 9 months after my son was born I've worked part or full time since I was 13. When he was little I taught at night school 2 nights a week and when he started school I went back to teaching in schools so I was always at home for him. I only work part time running Youth Theatres now but I love it and cannot imagine giving it up yet. If we were unspeakably rich I'd still do it, I think.

I can't begin to imagine not earning my own money, even though we share everything and have joint accounts.

Next month I start getting my pension from teaching and it doesn't feel right to be getting money without doing any work for it.

After never working in a job I really liked, I would buy a wedding dress shop and sit with my friend, drinking champage, whilst the brides to be tried on their dresses. I might give them a glass of champagne too.

Thats after I have given half of the winnings (I hope I've got millions) to various charities and helped my family and friends. Hope I have enough.

My sentiments exactly Janey - but I couldn't/can't afford the car - hence the bike.
I moved to a more urban area (if you can call Winchester urban - it's a city, Jim, but not as we know it - ancient, and local).
My girls got a lift to Secondary school. I gave them bus money to get home, they had the choice - pay for the bus or walk 3 miles home and keep the money!! They walked most of the time.

A close friend of mine became unintendedly pregnant while she was an undergraduate, and decided to have the baby. The father was not in the picture, by his choice.

She told me she used to think, while shlepping the kid a half hour one way on the Metro to the daycare centre, then back as far in the other direction to go to class, then all over again in reverse at the end of the day, all in the middle of a Montreal winter:

I wish I had a man ... or a car ...

... preferably a car ...

Susan,
That's nice- I'd probably make a profit from it too!!
But a home like that is what I would want in my dotage!
I also think married couples should have a double bed if they wish, and a computer for everyone who wanted one in their room.
I suppose it would be a bit like a commune for the elderly.

BTW- In reply to the other aspect on this thread, I also worked until I had my children - but when I had my elder, we lived in the middle of nowhere -
1 bus a week. I had been an agricultural worker, but there were very limited (no) chldcare facilities, and breastfeeding whilst planting cabbages /picking spuds was a little difficult, so we lived on the wages of an agricultural engineer for 3 years.
When we moved, I got a job as a cleaner at a student hostel. I took my elder (aged 4 ) the 2 miles to nursery on a bike the younger (aged 14 months) came with me to work - where I openly breastfed her.
A few students (who should have been at college) saw me, but were unaware of what I was doing - they just thought baby was asleep and I was watching TV LOL
When ex & I split up, (children aged 6 & 3) I was fortunate enough to get a job in a school, so was able to be at home when my children were. Perhaps I could be considered a 'freak' for wanting to breastfeed my children for as long as they wanted (within reason) - 22 months each, but we had little money coming in and it was free!! LOL

It has also come to light that breastfed babies are less likely to be a problem in school -and, despite being the children of a single parent - my children caused little hassle at school, and needed no extra help.
Elder has 3 very well behaved (breastfed) children and younger has one degree in geography/geology, and is about to get another - a PGCE!!!

BUT - I would still happily not work for anyone!!!
