Got the marriage certificate this morning. It was the correct one. It appears she changed her name by deed to Geldart. She lied on her wedding certificate saying she was 31yrs old, when she was 39yrs old and her husband was 24yrs old, so could well still be alive! I can't believe she married someone 4yrs older than her own son!!! Unbelievable! Don't know the witnesses to the marriage, I'm assuming they must've been friends of theirs.

Thank you all so much for your help

Helen,

You may be better off send for the marriage cert in Leslie H Oddy's name then you will get the right one.

Because on the Yorkshire BMD site the marriage for Vera is registered in both Geldart and Brown.

Hi

Got the death certificate today and that was the correct Vera, she died in Yeovil of heart disease at 88yrs old.

She was married to the man we thought, but the marriage certificate I received was for 2 completely different people?!!! Odd!! I entered all the details correctly too! Mmmmm . .

Helen,

There's no marriage for a Vera Bessie to an Oddy. What did your order?

Thanks for all your help.

I've now ordered the death and marriage certificate of Vera Bessie Oddy. Lets see what that gives me.

I've also contacted a couple of people with the new husbands name to see if there's a link there.

Thank you so much!

I have Vera's birth certificate. Unfortunately, I gave all the certificates to my Dad and he lives in Wales, I live in Hertfordshire. I've copied the information from the certificates to my tree. If it helps, I can give you access to that? x

I like the first one.

Can't see a marriage for a Vera B to an Oddy, but that's okay because legally she would be unable to marry.

There's a marriage for a Bessie V Tuffs to a Walter C J Macklin. Here's her birth so we can rule her out:

Births Jun 1911
Tuffs Bessie V Winchester 2c 137

There are only 24 births for a Vera B registered between Jan 1st and June 30th 1911, so the odds are good that Vera Oddy is the one.

Choccy, where did you find that information?

Helen

Helen Report 29 Mar 2011 21:14

Wow thanks everyone. Yes that's the one. Sorry, it was a spur of the moment thing to post a thread, so I didn't have all the details to hand.

She left home when my dad was around 12yrs old, never to be seen again by anyone. (Her own mother did the same, so I'll hit another brick wall with Florence! TUT!)

I've contacted the Salvation Army and they couldn't locate her. I've searched all the deaths around wartime, as she was apparently posted to Southampton just before the heavy bombing there. I don't know how people find this kind of information out, I'm just treading water with her. My dad (now 81yrs old) has decided he wants to know what happened to her.

:-)
