not just for the genealogy ( yeah right)

I keep meaning to go....but never quite make it....what are your reasons?

the reason i stay is i can get a wide opinion on things sometimes its not always what you want to hear but i do ask for honest opinions, thats my reason other than friends who i do chat to in emails xx

You are up late Puss, hope you are ok.

Susan, these boards are my social contact a lot of the time as I don't get out as often as I would like due to the fm and other constraints.

I will put up with the difficult bits on here and usually manage to ignore the wums and nasties, as the lovely people I have met and become friends with far outweigh the dodgy parts.

Also I have learned so much about so many things since reading threads

Oh and sometimes I do bits of my family tree too lol

WHY DO YOU STAY

ButtercupFields

ButtercupFields Report 16 Sep 2010 07:02

I stay because, in spite of Hayley and others leaving, there are still a few people on here that I care about. Also I belong to the GR Writing Club and it is a spur to keep me writing so I wouldn't like to leave it! At the centre of GR Chat and General there is a warm core of people who really care and now and then (oh I admit it, less and less!) you can have a laugh on here. That's why:-)) BC XX

That was me deleting..I double posted.

Sheer bloody-mindedness, I think.

I have friends I only see on this site and I'd miss them if I disappeared altogether.

I've been researching all of my own and two branches of my OH's family tree - for years. I work at it for a while, then give it a rest and when I come back to it, there are usually new sites operating where I can get info from, and there is always the helpers on here too.
I have made quite a few very nice friends on Chat and General and I notice that if anyone doesn't understand something, we/they just have to mention it and there will always be someone who will answer - so that makes it educational as well. I like to think I can help someone with something occasionally.

Im new to Genes, but I have been on a number of forums and I find on forums things can be read 2 ways, something so innocent can be taken the wrong way.

But why do you stay?......

- partly for genealogy, sometimes I see something that is of help to me, sometimes I like to try to help others.

- partly because I have made real friends from this site.

- partly because I would have to pay a lot more for subscription if I left and returned :-)

Mowtowngirl and all, a very good morning. I cannot believe that you have only been a member since June, Mowtowngirl. You post like a hardened pro. and I mean that with all sincerity.
I too have experienced what you have described. By and large whenever I post asking for advice etc, I get a positive response, and although, and this goes for others also, it may not be what we want to hear, it is always good to hear how others feel/think about a particular problem.
However, there are those that respond in a negative way, and can be downright rude and obnoxious. If a person is troubled enough about something in their life, to post it on here for the world to see, they do not want to come up against that sort of response. It can be hurtfull and upsetting. I too have apologised to people that I have unknowingly and not in anyway deliberate, offended. I only wish that others would be as generous.
Yes, we have lost some very dear friends on here of late, and I feel this board is a sadder place for that loss. They were the people that were the voice of reason, and would not have tollerated the despicable behavour of some posting now.
I for one, would love to see these people back, and live in hope that one day, this may happen.

Susan with numbers

Sometimes something that I see or a contact re a tree can make a difference.
Sometimes I find I can help someone with their queries and that can make a difference for them.

I have chatted with Berona, Liz, Puss, Gwen and yourself at sometime or other - I like to consider you all friends.

I have met people that belong to GR - one of them a fellow poster Huia and she is a really lovely lady and I am glad to have met her.

There is a main thread that I chat on and the Greaders group which I belong to and the list goes on.

These threads solve ailments, they can be a laugh or a challenge or a debate on various subjects.

I can't see a reason to go apart from GRs hiccoughs, but there are plenty of reasons to stay.

Good morning Susanwithnumbers:)

I keep coming back (mostly) cos I like the laughs and discussion on here when there is some and it was really one of the first places I mingled on the internet. There are some nice people about:)

Also (only a little bit though) for genealogy but I don't keep a tree on here anymore.

Hi Susan, I stay because, believe it or not I have had mostly only friendliness and kindness on here. Just one episode that I have tried to put behind me. I love to chat to people and don't have a great social life. I also love the card making, greaders, scrapping and writers threads. I have made some lovely friends on here too and I like the way support is freely offered when asked for.

Rambling Report 16 Sep 2010 10:43

Morning all... most of the reasons I stay have been given by others, Gwynne summed it up nicely lol.

There are people I would miss, just seeing they are around cheers me :)) I like to learn a bit more (not just about genealogy) and quite often a link or remark in a debate will set me off on a little search keeping my brain active.

It's a bit like an Agatha Christie book / film ..there are nice characters, dodgy ones, people who invite you into their lives...and the fun of being detective as to who the 'killer wum' really was ;) But it's a really good 'comfortable' read over all. Other aspects of life can be challenging but here is where you can feel you are with (in the main) friendly, caring, interesting and interested people.

On here, I am not 'someone's mum', 'aunt', tenant, employee' , I am just 'me'. :)

I would pay my subs regardless of General or Chat Thread..... as I am always fascinated by the TTF & History & Record Office boards they give me no end of entertainment as to how clever members are in seeking info for others .....worth my £9-95 subs.

But do care for a lot of members here as most are caring & entertaining , first thing I do when I wake up , switch my lappy on, look at most threads.
part of my life now, but I can switch OFF too ....!!

I'm happy to stay ...LOL

I think I have been a member for 7 years or more and have seen many nice people leaving because of nastiness by a member. Said member leaves at some time later and another person of trhe same ilk appears to take up the cudgel of nastiness.

This is bullying and there is some going on at the moment been quiet for 24 hours but I give fair warning if I see it again, I shall (for the first time) report it. Bullys only get away with it because we let them. It does not just happen in school.
