we took out the bottom cupboards in our kitchen, but we kept the top cupboards .... which probably dated back to when the house was built about 70-75 years ago.

They were firmly attached to the walls, very solid, and the shelves were almost all of usable size.

We did replace the doors.

But a friend who is a carpenter build everything, so even the new bottom cupboards and drawer units are much better built than if we had got mass-produced from a kitchen store.

We had pull-out shelving installed in the 2 corner units ................ they pull out half way, then turn at an angle so another part of the shelving from inside the inaccessible part also comes out.

there is even room by the side of the shelving to put the very large fish pan and the turkey plate.

We also have 2 cutlery drawers, and I managed to buy wooden inserts from Ikea that fit nicely into them. We have all our cutlery, corn holders, kebab sticks, and bottle openers in one. The other is for cooking-related .......... including can opener, and bottle lid remover. Plus I have a pottery vase that I was given years ago on the counter with large spatulas, fryers, spoons, and a wooden rack on the wall for the sharp cooking knives

Tec ........... we also found items that we had no memory of buying, and / or did not know what they were for. Daughter took a couple of things, the rest went to the church thrift shop.

I would absolutely love to go to the Proms, last night of course, just for the atmosphere.
I love the people in eccentric attire :-D

It has been very hard work getting ready to change the kitchen without any help, but it's done now, just got to clear the worktops tomorrow.

Could have done without the visitors in the middle of it all, but can't be helped.

Suddenly the text on my screen has gone very small - hard to read.
I have tried to enlarge it using the box at the top of the screen, but nothing happens?

We are watching it as well Tec, but it is still on the boring serious bit :-)

We changed the kitchen in this house even though it was only about four or five years old, the cupboards we took out were of a much better quality than the ones we put in. we considered just changing the doors at first, but the layout was absolutely useless, so we just changed the whole thing

Hello, :-)

While emptying the cupboards and drawers ready for the new kitchen I have found things and gadgets that not only did I not recognise, I have no idea what they are used for.
I'm sure the Duchess never used them.

My old kitchen is going to be dumped, but my neighbour has a wood burner, and she said that she could cut up the doors and drawer fronts to burn. So I have been taking them off today. They are solid oak, so should burn hot and slow.
My new kitchen will not be solid oak, probably solid Weetabix :-D

This evening I am watching "Last Night at the Proms" from the Royal Albert Hall.

Sitting here with my gin and tonic, waving my little Union Jack, singing............

Land of Hope and Glory,
Jerusalem,
Rule Brittania,
There'll Always Be An England etc etc,

Wallowing in a sea of patriotism

:-D :-D :-D

I know what you mean about the back corners Persie. My daughter has two pull out larder units in her kitchen and something had spilt in one of them. The white bottom was covered in a disgusting black sticky mess. I think it has been there for a long time. Really the pull out section should be taken out, but I couldn't do that on my own,so I was crawling about on the floor trying to get to the back of them. They are narrow and it was very difficult, I had to resort to the floor mop to get to the back. They are not as clean as I would like, but the worst one is now far more hygienic than it was.

It is amazing just how much clutter you do accumulate. we were ruthless when we moved and I am not a hoarder, but in the thirteen years we have been here, it has all built up again

I have two cutlery drawers.. and I also use a china pot plant holder for all my many utensils and a smaller terracotta one that my daughter gave me houses all my wooden spoons, spatulas and forks. I even have a wooden whisk which I should throw away as it is not something I use .. think it came with the terracotta holder.

I have one room with loads of boxes all ready to go and in the small room across the hall I have more bags of stuff for the charity shop and then on the other side of that room I have bags of books and clothes for a friend. Then there is another three bags of jigsaws and children's games and other bits and pieces for another friend and her family.

Took three kleensack size plastic bags of games over to the family last weekend along with a couple of their plates that I had ended up with plus bits and pieces.

It seems to be never ending, and then there is heaps that I have binned as well, I could not believe what came down out of the loft above the utility room.

Today I cleaned the two shelves in one of those corner cupboards under the bench it goes in for miles. I had to lie down on the floor and crawl into the back corner was like doing army manoeuvres on my stomach. We have been here 27 years and those cupboards were easy enough when I was younger but now it is exhausting.

I know one thing when we find the place we want I am staying put. And I will be checking out all kitchens to ensure I don't have the same problem. I did think of using the floor mop but I wanted to get right into the joins.

Only two orchids, that was very restrained of you Sue.

Hello Berona, I hope you are fighting fit.

It is amazing hw many duplicate things we have in the kitchen Sylvia. I have two cutlery drawers, one just has the tray with the knives, forks and spoons in it, plus the can opener. The drawer underneath was just a jumble of other utensils, I could never find anything I was looking for, so I bought some small plastic baskets and sorted it out, getting rid of all the extra bottle openers etc which never got used. It saves time now because I can get my hand on what I want straight away.

Hello Persie, lovely to see you. I hope that your OH is better now. It sounds as if your house move is well on the way, I don't envy you that task

We could do with a kitchen refit, just the cupboards they are tired but then so am I.
Have packed so many boxes for storage in the horse truck, which is away getting a replacement engine. It is getting quite costly this vehicle but I think it should be back this coming week. It looks like they overcooked the engine, but these things need to be done and it has a good body and the replacement engine will improve it.

Apparently this bloke bought the engine for his vehicle and spent a fair bit on it and it was not the right one for his vehicle and he was in the dog box with his wife over all the money he had spent. Now it is not so bad as he has recuperated some of it from us... I think she should send us a thank you card.. haven't a clue who she or he is.. all done through the vehicle guy who fixes a lot of company vehicles.

I am bad enough when I get a cold, so my sympathies are with Esme and hope she soon gets better.

And no I haven't caught up on the thread but hope everyone else is doing okay.

cheers Persie

Hi Sue, and everyone

another sunny day here ............. but fall is on its way .......... night temperatures are getting down to 10C and below :-)

We had our kitchen done about 4 years ago ............... had less cupboard space than before, and we got rid of a whole pile of stuff that we didn't use

for example, we had 3 can openers, but only used one of them :-)

we also moved some stuff that we only used once a year down to the basement for storage ................. for example, some of the jam making equipment.

It was amazing how much we threw out :-)

Enjoy your day at the orchid day, Sue

Linda .............. sorry to hear that Esme has got a cold. I hope she soon feels better

take care everyone
