Linda ......... that's why questions are being asked!

There are very stringent regulations!

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Oct 2014 22:15

Tec .......

...... the main heating is blown air from a natural gas-fired furnace. We also have a natural gas heated hot water tank.

The 3 rooms that we added in 1976/7 have individual electric baseboard heating .............. it was deemed that the furnace wasn't large enough but there wasn't enough space to put in the size that would have been needed.

It actually works well for us ................... although electric heat is more expensive, we only this room is heated on a regular basis. The bedroom is heated only when we have visitors, and the bathroom almost never heated.

........... and we can turn down the main heating if we want to.

OH has a free-standing electric heater in the basement if he needs to boost the blown air in very cold weather.

I also have a free-standing one in this room ............... the large amount of windows and the skylight does mean that it gets cold in here when the temperature falls below 0C

That sounds dreadful Sylvia.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 4 Oct 2014 22:11

That doesn't sound good Sylvia, you would think they would have very strict building regulations in place

SueMaid Report 4 Oct 2014 22:11

Hello everyone :-D

I'm glad your knee is feeling better, Linda.

Tec - I couldn't foster dogs. I wouldn't be able to let them go :-(

Sylvia - sadly we get to an age where there are more funerals than weddings :-(

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Oct 2014 22:09

there was a huge fire in the city yesterday evening, only about 2 miles from us.

A Seniors' Apartment Complex less than a month from completion and the first residents moving in :-(

The worrying thing is that some witnesses are saying that it began in the area of the central elevator on the top floor, and then spread in BOTH directions from there, until the whole roof and top floor was alight.

No word on the cause, yet .................... but some questions are being as to the presence or absence of fire separation walls, especially with it being for seniors.

OH is being nosy .............. he's just walked up there to have a look :-)

It caused horrible traffic jams and diversions, both last night and today ................ it is right on the corner of 2 major streets, one north-south, and the other east-west ...................... both were closed for hours.

Tecwyn Report 4 Oct 2014 22:08

Of course you're not going anywhere yet Linda, you have the rest of your holiday :-D

Hello Sylvia - What kind of heating do you have there?
I have LPG gas. There isn't any mains gas in the village.

LindainHerriotCountry Report 4 Oct 2014 22:05

I already have an appointment with my doctor for the day after I get back, so he cAn learn all about my knee then.

You do seem to be having a lot of memorials recently Sylvia, that comes with age I suppose

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Oct 2014 22:01

Hi everyone

I turned on the main heating in the house yesterday evening ......... it felt so chilly.

I've had the baseboard heating on in the evenings in this room for the last 4 or 5 evenings. The days have been warm enough, but it gets cold when the sun goes down.

I know we will have the main heating on from tomorrow for at least 2 days ................ our friend JR from the Island is coming to visit, and she feels the cold.

We all have another Memorial to go to on Monday, the wife of one of OH and JR's longtime colleagues.

It rained hard overnight here, but is just cloudy today.

Linda ........... glad to hear that your knee is getting better. And, of course, you will see your doctor at home :-)

LindainHerriotCountry Report 4 Oct 2014 22:01

I am not thinking of going anywhere just yet

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 4 Oct 2014 21:53

No I'm not saving on gas, I refuse to be cold, and I'm warm enough at the moment.
Will probably wish I had put it on when it's time to go to bed :-(

I couldn't do what Sue does, but she does find permanent homes for dogs that would otherwise be destroyed, which is so sad because they are nice dogs that deserve a chance and a loving home.

I am coming back as a Labrador, with a soppy owner :-D

LindainHerriotCountry Report 4 Oct 2014 21:47

We'll if you are saving on oil that is good, I hope we have a mild winter this year. We have the air con on here

It must be strange for Milo to have other dogs coming and going. Good job he can take refuge with you if he doesn't like them

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 4 Oct 2014 21:37

I do feel a little sorry for Milo with other dogs turning up. He does seem to get on with them.
I just hope the new dog isn't nasty, because Milo is so gentle he wouldn't know how to react.

I didn't put the heating on, it seems warm enough without.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 4 Oct 2014 21:25

I think you should put the heating on, we had ours on before we left.

Milo is obviously fond of you or he doesn't like sleeping alone. He won't want to go home when she gets back, especially if another dog is there to share her affections

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 4 Oct 2014 19:09

It's good that your knee is a little better, and of course you need to see your own doctor at home, so that the problem can be investigated properly.
Shame that you were not able to explore the gardens, and the town, but at least you are forced to rest, which you badly needed to do.

It absolutely hammered down during the night. Woke me up at 4am. However, it had cleared by 8am, and turned out to be a nice sunny day. A trifle cool at 15C.

I managed to get the hedge cut using the tree lopper, extended, from the wheelchair.

Milo is being very attentive of everything I do :-D
His bed is in the lounge, but I found him curled up beside my bed this morning in the other room. :-)

I think I might put the heating on, first time this year.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 4 Oct 2014 19:00

I went back to see the doctor today. My knee is still swollen, but better than it was. He just told me to take Ibroprofen and gave me some cream to rub on it as well .he told me to go and see my own doctor when I get home as it probably needs a scan

It has been 30 degrees again today, but because of the wind it doesn't seem that hot. I have just been reading and doing crosswords and sudoku puzzles as normal. It is a pity I am so immobile because there are lovely gardens in the hotel which I can't explore. The little town seems nice as well, but I have only seen it from the taxi on the way to the clinic.

I hope you haven't been washed away by all the rain Tec

Sylvia - definately not a coincidence :-( I said after the American mother pleaded for her son's life that it was a big mistake.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Oct 2014 00:22

re the killings ......................

I realised something this morning ......................

each of the last 3 hostages were killed with 7-10 days of a family member making a plea for their life

Coincidence, or ???????????????????

we're currently about to have a debate in Parliament (on Monday) on sending aircraft and ???what else to help the US ..................

our Prime Minister has been very quiet about exactly what will be entailed since he announced 1 month ago that Canada would be aiding US for "the next 30 days".

The 30 days are up this weekend ................. and the Opposition parties are still trying to get information about that as well as for the next steps which have apparently been promised!
